Opinions on Older Round Nose Mercedes Trucks (LA911, etc.) for budget Overland Travel??

Google translate of the linked to OP advert; "After 2 years of construction, we sell our "almost finished" travel truck. It is a Mercedes LA 1113 B (ex rescue vehicle), which we acquired as the second owner directly from the fire department in Recklinghausen (with 19,500 kilometers on the...

Short Bed Unimog Small Pop Up Camper

I had a chat with Alaskan about making a cabover to suit which they were happy to do. My thoughts were to make a seperate Storage Sandwich (TM) within which to put fluids, spare tyre maybe, and access from each side, to jack up the camper to a suitable height to get cabover clearance when...

Unimog 1300L composite body camper - replacing damp plywood and re-sealing

We had a camper that started as a U1300l with overcab bed with a similar overall size to that. If you have a frame within the walls that might be too heavy, and it maybe looks a bit too close to the cab roof once axle twisted up but you can test that. Even with a light turbo ours couldn't...

Unimog or 911 for Family of 5

Hiya I don't really get why people say you won't use a Mog's off road ability once you put your house on the back? If that's what you want to do then why not? Many, many choose a Mog to travel as you know. The proportion of other miles travelled compared to those when you have diff locks...

Hello From NZ and help with a Big decision to make

Thank you for replying :) Will your seatbelts for the swivel seats be fixed to walls and floor? I know you can have seats with the seatbelt built in but I wonder if there are swivels strong enough to carry their loading to the floor? I can't quite see how you have the headroom to have both...

Hello From NZ and help with a Big decision to make

Hi, some of my poor value observations based on my not yet finished build. Will your swivel seats face forward when travelling, will there be enough legroom? If your passenger seats faced forward but at the rear of the dinette then no swivel required saving space and maybe making a better...

    Headlights for 1120

Sitec do you still have an air tank for trailer brakes sitting there waiting to run an air horn? :)

Winch or not and if so sizing of one

M37Charlie carries and has used his winches and anchors in a situation he would have been in trouble had he not been able to recover himself. Once you get up to that sort of capacity though the components will eat into your payload too. I did think a centrally mounted Rotzler on the Mog we had...

Winch or not and if so sizing of one

I think unless you are travelling with another vehicle of similar size a big winch will be unanchorable in most situations. If you can go and find an excavator or something that you could anchor to then maybe something like that could just pull you anyway? A few spare shovels may be an idea...

    Headlights for 1120

Hi Diplostrat, to reduce LED output on low beam you could look at a Skene IQ-275 dimmer. Two outputs for two pairs of lights if you wanted, each output can be set at 10% increments perhaps to suit low and high beam switching?

Hello From NZ and help with a Big decision to make

Will they sit in the camper section? Just regarding the green ring you asked about on the Mog, thats the headlight switch. There should be a little bar across the middle of the knob that you slide to either get normal road lights on one side, or only convoy (minimal tiny) lights on the other.

Hello From NZ and help with a Big decision to make

Our U1700 was 9500kg fully full, about 3.8m tall, could do 55mph but 50 was better on 395 85 R20 XZLs, working gears, exhaust brake, no overdrive, intercooled by Atkinson Vos, not quite 10 UK mpg. Turning circle was ace, was lovely to drive and easy to position. 7th to 8th was a bit of a jump...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi Neil. After extending our Iceland trip in 2010? to the last vehicle ferry of the year we found the tarmac road up, over and down to Seydisfjörður harbour covered in sheet ice, road with no barriers etc. not a good place to have put our 9500kgs in with the clock ticking. I'm told bus drivers...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

No fresh water stored inside? I was thinking about diesel fillers being shielded rather than water but that's a good idea too. So you don't think you'll ever take the truck where putting chains on, or at least carrying them, is a requirement?

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

That looks really nice :) Since you mention external water tanks maybe this is a moot point, but do your cardboard wheel arches allow for chains? And will your skirts cover tank filling points or change-over valves just to make fiddling by others a bit less easy? Jason

Power systems (fuel) - help me decide

The camper should probably be made in a way that being left cold and damp won't affect the material. Personal stuff inside not so sure how you do that if unheated for weeks though? If you need a set up that will still work if the heater/power etc fails in your absence then in planning for that...

    Tatra vs MB crewcab 6x6

If the gearbox or anything else that needs access from above where the box will be then you could add access hatches in the camper floor. A day removing internal stuff is much easier and cheaper than lifting the box off perhaps? If the gearbox needs to go up to come out then that's a different...

    U1300L Camper

When KCT are fully open the pane section blocks the view which seems a bit annoying, but tooooo much money anyhow!
