    Mercedes Overland Building/Tuning

I'm perilously close to importing a MB firetruck, I have some pic's & description, but I'll get first hand confirmation of condition/specs in a few weeks. As I prepare myself mentally for what could be the colossal mistake of thinking I can convert this monster into an overlander, I thought I...

    FMTV for World Travel?

Actually I'm waiting on a quote now from Allways, to get a Mercedes 1428 firetruck imported. I got one ballparK figure of $9800.

I have, same issue as with the FMTV, can you get parts in outside of the US without waiting 2 months for it to get there. If I was broke down in Prague, that would be fine. But with my luck it will be in someplace I'd rather not be for that long.

    FMTV for World Travel?

In my search for a Mercedes to import I found a LMTV for sale in Europe, which started me thinking about NATO and how parts just might be around the rest of the world more than you would think.

    FMTV for World Travel?

I actually asked about just buying the truck, with their refurbishment of course. But they will only sell the truck with the subframe & box. So, I'd be at around 180k plus 10K to import. And still have to build out the interior and add all of the mechanicals. Not unreasonable, but if I'm...

Not a bad idea brother! I had my brake pedal go to the floor on a race track before- not a good feeling...

    FMTV for World Travel?

That's exactly my thought process. But I'm struggling with finding a Mercedes Doka 4x4 here in the states, hell, I've never even seen one in person (going to Expo East, so here's to hoping). I just got off the phone with Martin from Terra Exp, nice guy, helpful, but all their trucks are in...

Your right, no desire for high speed runs. Just with 70mph speed limits here, maxing out at 55mph is going to be painful.

Checking them out now, thanks for the tip!

    FMTV for World Travel?

Went through your build thread, very impressive! It's very tempting, but there are a few things I want, like a pass through, garage, etc., the 55-60mph top speed is a little bit of an issue, touring the U.S. first.

    FMTV for World Travel?

I'm not dead set on a FMTV, actually if they were side by side, I'm take the Mercedes. But am chasing down all the possibilities before I make a very expensive decision.

Actually, it looks like whiteacorn did the US in a Ford and a Unimog for the rest of the world.

Thanks for the reply. The Cat engine/Allison trans are not DOD regulated and parts can be bought over the counter/sourced overseas to a point. Same to be said for various other parts that are based on civilian designs. Not worried about restoring with original parts. There are several...

    M101A2 "Copycat" Camper Build

Nice work! That looks like a great alterative to the very expensive adventure trailers out there.

    FMTV for World Travel?

There's always the big debate over base trucks. Has anyone here actually travelled with a FMTV rig outside of the U.S.? Any actual experiences to share with parts/repairs? I've been searching for an older Mercedes but those are hard to come by and before I start any importing madness, I...

E-bike or motorcycle for secondary vehicle

I think it depends on your intended use. I've been researching both recently. The EBike/Electric Motorcycle has split up into various category's. The first is the Zero's/Harley's that are electrified motorcycles. Then very powerful E 'Bikes', with ones like the CAB Recon, 80mph top speed...

    Overland Expo Mountain West thoughts

I'm also attending Overland East, it will be my first event of this nature. I certainly hope the vendors are there in force, I intend to hit the road in a few years and want to start the rig building process now so I'm ready.

    Importing Advice

Thanks so much for the info, I did find a company in Florida, Tera Exp, that brings them in. I have an inquiry in with them now. But it appears they won't just sell you the truck, but wants to do the build for you. But building it myself will save a ton of money and I'll be very familiar with...

    Importing Advice

You caught my mistake/typo. I started out thinking I would build this after I retired, by that time the Ategos would hit 25yrs. They started building the Aetgo's in '98, so I'm still 16 months out at least. But since looking at build threads, especially yours!, I decided I wanted to get...

    Importing Advice

Hello! I'm ready to take the first step in building an overland rig. The plan is a common one, do the build, travel the US working out the kinks in the rig (and myself!) then South America, overseas to Europe, etc. My rationale is based on Mercedes being widely distributed/parts availability...
