I know crash tests are important and all but it is still a lab test and real life can be very different. The Jeep doesn't fare that well in the lab, but it is a body on frame and I will take my chances in a BOF vehicle before any other. For instance, this video, if this kid was in anything...
You won't regret the aluminum RCI skids, mine have been solid. Also check out C4Fabs slimline offering. The only con (or pro) is that you have to get it powder coated or paint it.

The 4runner shifter has cables connected to it, the Jeep auto does not. I'm not sure you are understanding that there is no linkage of any kind going to the shifter in an auto trans Jeep. All the shifting is done electronically in the Jeep auto.
I'm talking about the automatic shifter, it is basically there for looks only. It is not attached to anything mechanical and shifts between gears electronically. So why waste the space and put a shifter there? Could just go push button shifting on the dash and have a lot of space for things...

I mountain bike and the only thing that irritates me is when people ride after a lot rain. This does a lot of damage to the trails. But it's a trail or trails, two to three feet wide, in the middle of hundreds of square miles of forest. Virtually equivalent to a very well used game trail.
Yeah this question is so wide open depending on which generation of both vehicles being discussed. As far as the current generation goes, hands down the 4Runner is the better vehicle. YMMV but I'm right.;)
