Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

I have heard of people putting in the Cummins motors, but they need quite a lot of mods to the cab to fit - not as easy upgrading the OM352 to similar power, you can even get a factory OM366 with 300hp/800Nm but I would not like to see the fuel consumption if you use that power.

I put the truck on a dyno last weekend, Our truck makes 123HP / 440Nm at the wheels, and has a nice flat torque curve between 1800-2200rpm. The air/fuel ratio is where it gets interesting, as it shows that the truck is running quite lean for a diesel, especially when the boost climbs...

    Heavy Truck Tires

I made a video on how I swapped my tyres on normal wheels and the two piece wheels. You will need a proper bead breaker and tyre irons, not the little ones for car tyres. I got the proper Michellin set of three, they are great. I use Tyrepliers to break the bead on the tyres. As...

    Lean angle, Roll.

On ours Unimog U1250, we have recently gone over 35 degrees, but the was turning at the bottom of a dune on an entrance to the beach and we had a sand wall on the one side so that we could not really fall over, but we didn't hit it, just hanging on was difficult for my co-pilot. We try not to...

In addition, I have refurbed the back axle, with new diff lock seals, new seal in the torque tube and new bearings and seals in the portals. This should be good for another 9 years or so. I also have a new custom rear sway bar - it is 39mm compared to the original one being 32mm. mm...

Finished my new exhaust, 4" from front to rear. It is quite a tight fit, so I have added a lot of extra hangers to stop it moving around. I have two flex joints, as the movement will be concentrated in the section between the engine block and the camper subframe. I have a semi rigid...

Introduction, Tuning/Uprating Story And How I Got here

Hi, not offense taken, all good discussions are great. I have official Bosch technical manual for the inline fuel pumps, it covers everything on these pumps in detail. One section here below: The LDA doesn't increase the fuel beyond the full load - I've highlighted the section. I also...

A bit of an update. Since the rear axle is off, and I am still waiting for some seals, I'm doing a lot more of the other things on the truck that need doing. The turbo dump pipe I made 10 years ago cracked, probably due to the weeks of chassis twisting we did on this trip. I'll make a new...

Introduction, Tuning/Uprating Story And How I Got here

Hi, welcome to the forum, I've been down the "more power and speed" road, and settled down to around 200hp, up a bit from the original 125hp in our 8 ton Unimog U1250. I could make a bit more by turning up the fuel screw on the pump, but my goal has always been reliability reducing fuel...

Two $28 seals let go and and you have to take the whole back axle apart

I did some more data manipulation of the records. Because we don't fill up the tanks when they reach any particular level, and sometimes don't fill them completely if the price is high and we know it is cheaper in the next town, the records of each tank give pretty strange results. With the...

Not really sure, but could have been when we were doing a lot of long highway trips at high speed. The first lower consumption would be when we were running the new engine in, and had turned the boost down. Since we fitted the new transmission around 60,000km things seems to be pretty steady...

A half day cutting any polishing and it has made a big difference. I'll wait until I get back to do it properly with the polishing machine. Just can't reach up here.

Thanks, not much to repair. Most of the scatches will polish out, as I used an industrial machinery paint not a car paint. Will do some hand polishing with a heavy cutting compound today. Our camper has a 2mm thick aluminium skin, not fridge box material so is pretty tough, we have a few...

Some of the realities of driving a large truck on tracks created by much smaller vehicles. I would not to have even tried these tracks without the extensive bar work we have, and our truck is smaller than most Unimogs. The angled roof helped a lot, without it, we would have had to do a lot...

We have made it across Australia, another 10,000km mainly on dirt road and a desert crossing as well. This is the latest fuel consumption. Things have averaged out and are sitting around 21 L/100km or 11.2mpg (US) which I think for an 8 ton truck is pretty good. We also got stuck for the...

I'll will be putting these into our video of our Simpson Desert crossing, but here are some FB links to show how much the chassis flexes on our truck. https://fb.watch/vRDBvDHyM9/ https://fb.watch/vRDKrQIBPf/ This one shows the suspension working, and what happens when you hit some really...
