    Last resort fire starter?

There are a lot of layers to “last resort”, but if I’m backpacking I’m not carrying a road flare... too heavy and single use. Backpacking and maybe gonna die without fire I’m going for one of those little magnesium blocks with a piece of hacksaw blade on a key ring. I’ll be using a pocket...

    Last resort fire starter?

Yup. You have to keep the flares fresh, so use them when you need to get one going.

    Jku Engine Swap options

My 2018 expedition with the 3.5 turbo spanks the Jeep routinely. I would gladly do that swap if it could be done. Of course, having 5 more speeds in the transmission helps!

    Jku Engine Swap options

My 3.6 2014 definitely struggles to maintain speed on freeways, especially at altitude or with winds. It is very happy cruising at 55-60, but you notice how much it is suffering if you make run like I-15N from the AZ strip to 70, it is a fight the entire way. Typically this results in long...

    Thule Tepui Foothill RTT

It is cool to see something like this hitting the market. It always seemed like an obvious gap. I just wonder if reaching across the roof to deploy and fold might be an issue? I would have to see one up close.

    Types of tire chains?

Ive been in this category for 20 years or so, but I’ve recently been thinking of changing to true chains without rubber tension elements. One of the annoyances I have with the cables is the amount of space they consume due to their stiffness. Having never owned true chain based chains, do they...

    Roof rack for soft top

Gobi. Still takes some effort to do the top though.

    Looking for RTT opinions

I wouldn’t completely discount a soft tent just yet. Consider: A used soft shell can be a very economical way to test the waters and see if you are going to like the whole up and down a ladder thing. Plus, resale is almost even on a used Tepui or CVT or similar. The soft tent takes a lot...

    RRT and sup board rack

Not me, but saw lots of these in Hawaii (Maui) on my last visit. Tents offset to one side, boards standing on edge along the other side.

    Long Telescoping Swing Down Jacks

Plus 1 for the Bal-C. I think I paid about $100 for a pair of 30” on Amazon. I mounted them crosswise, at an angle toward the rear would have been much smarter. Deploy in less than a minute each.

JK(U) and JL(U) owners with an RTT I have a question

The Gobi rack allows removal if you don’t have the “sunroof” panel. Very loud with the rack on and roof off, so I only did it once. My panels leak so bad that I don’t like disturbing them anyway.

    Jku Engine Swap options

Better start with a CARB Referee. Why wouldn’t the 5.7 Hemi be on your list? There are also super charger kits available if you want to go from 3.6 to “blown“ 3.6. The last one I saw was described as able to pass “anything but a gas station”.

    Help w/ solar wiring

Not an expert, but IIRC, the open circuit voltage on the panels I installed was quite a bit higher than the nominal rating. I didn’t see an open circuit voltage in the specs for your rigid panels, but 100 Watt Renogy panels are 22 or 23 V each, so full sun, 4 panels is 88-90V in series, plus...

Retractable swim/boat ladder for camper access?

That looks like a pretty cool idea to me. I bet there are a lot of ways to make that work as a rack accessory under a tent or camper mount.

    lifting the tent rack questions

Did you buy square tube intended to be telescopic, or did you use something off the rack? How tight is the fit?

    Microphone dilemma, Kenwood TM-261A

Just making educated guesses here: My first thought is to contact a local ham club and plug your new mic into someone else’s radio to see if it works. If yes, then open yours up to look for a fuse or diode protecting just the digital pins of the mic?

    Comms Radio setup

I only have ham and CB, but did similar. Boxes under driver seat, ham antenna on an a-pillar light mount, CB antenna on rear tire carrier mount. Remote face for the ham on the bottom of the S-pod module over the windshield. I don’t worry about seeing the CB, as I rarely use it and even less...

Driving a 30’ Box Truck Over Engineer Pass, in an attempt to prove SWB 4x4 drivetrains aren’t really needed....

Ive been hiking in very remote stretches and come across abandoned vehicles. You wonder how on earth it could possibly happen... Now I have a better understanding.

    Imported Japanese vans, RVs, trucks

Hey there “Not a Bot”: Think about what state you will be registered in if you are looking at diesel import trucks. Cali is restricting lots of medium duty diesels from (2007?) And earlier. Just had to scrap a few trucks at work that wouldn’t be worth the $20+k for engine or exhaust upgrades...

    JK traction control issue

How would you know if traction control was cutting out on a dry canyon road? Is there a difference in a JK? I’m thinking that I’m talking about Stability Control but using the terms interchangeably. If there is a difference, my advice could be significantly less valuable.
