From Freightliner ambulance to RV - we hope!

Welcome back from wherever you were! Some observations/thoughts/comments: --I noticed that you have 10-bolt wheels. Both MNtal and I have 8 bolt, so the 10-bolt may have been spec'd by the end-user. Interesting. --We seem to all think alike on rear bumpers - MNtal and I have been planning to...

Buying & Building a Medium Ambulance into an RV – The FAM-BULANCE

My spare tire installation project is moving along - slowly, but forward. The weldment is done, the pieces needed to install it are done, and the unit has been painted with epoxy primer and a 2-component color coat. I had thought about making the mount from aluminum, but the costs convinced me...

Buying & Building a Medium Ambulance into an RV – The FAM-BULANCE

I ran into a Hubbell inlet on ebay the other day. It was originally set up for use on Thermo-King truck refrigeration units, and it has the same 30 amp, 125 volt rating as the marine power inlets we usually wind up with. The price is also decent - when you figure in shipping, $46.00. The ebay...

Belafonte Reboot....Ambulance to 4x4 Camper Conversion

Looks great from MN as well! Some thoughts from when I used to design painting equipment for industrial and auto plant use: I don't know what kind of spray gun you were using - body undercoating is sprayed with a schutz gun (which is one step more sophisticated than an insect flit gun) - it's...

The Rambulance: FL50 Freightliner Ambulance / Camper / Tow Rig - Conversion

Nice layout! It looks like a pullout table slides under the bed - that's a great use of space. If you need any slides, check out www.cabinetparts.com, and look at the Accuride 9301. They're rated at up to 500 Lbs, and they come in lengths up to 60". The mascot is definitely you...

Buying & Building a Medium Ambulance into an RV – The FAM-BULANCE

That makes sense, Ross. OK - here's the skinny on what we did: I'd installed new front brake shoes last year, and barely drove it afterwards. This summer, we took her out and got stuck in a 25 mile long conga line of traffic - the kind where you can see the light turn green 4 times before you...

And if you pull them, there will be a strong chance that many of the existing screw threads will be stripped, and you'll have the fun of repairing them. Whelen's instructions say to use a #10 sheet metal screw to install them, but builders more often used self-tapping 10-32 machine screws, and...

Buying & Building a Medium Ambulance into an RV – The FAM-BULANCE

I have been advised that the Throttle Position Sensor is definitely a critical part -- if it fails, I'm dead in the water. Since I have a Freightliner with a Cummins 5.9, I bought a replacement from Freightliner. When we tried to install it, we found that it didn't fit my throttle pedal - the...

It looks like you had a light bar mounted on horns from the module. Were they through bolted or into tapped holes?

Ambulance Camper/ Expedition Rig Conversion FAQ

You have a combined heating core / AC evaporator. There's a drain pan under the coil to route condensate through the floor. The dripping you're seeing is probably from a low refrigerant charge that's allowing some of the refrigerant to vaporize in the liquid line. That "junction box" you're...

Buying & Building a Medium Ambulance into an RV – The FAM-BULANCE

In the Amazon reviews, one guy grumbled that the tool didn't retain the sockets -- I could care less! I'm perfectly willing to drop a socket from time to time - especially compared to fighting with a 6 ft hunk of pipe on a wrench handle. I don't need "fancy", I just need to remove a lug nut.

A 5 Star Tool! Several months ago, I saw a mention by Ross Taylor where he mentioned a torque multiplier lug wrench (Amazon - who else?). I decided to buy one (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H99Y556/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1) since I wanted something that could live on...

Buying & Building a Medium Ambulance into an RV – The FAM-BULANCE

Freightliner struck again! After learning that a bad Throttle Position Sensor will stop you totally, I picked up a spare from Freightliner. When we tried to install it, we found that somewhere in the 15 years that my truck had been out there, a change was made, and they now used a totally...

Ambulance Camper/ Expedition Rig Conversion FAQ

It depends on if we're talking about a conventional ambulance or a medium ambulance. If it's a medium, does it have one compressor, or two? My Medic Master is built on a Freightliner chassis, and I have one compressor. The data plate says 4# - 6 oz of R134a refrigerant. There's usually a data...

    AmboLander

Now that the light bar is gone, this may be useless info, but generally, a module-mounted light bar is fastened to the module with 4 bolts (usually 5/16-18). The two outside bolts are usually carriage bolts, with access to the nuts through the emergency light openings. The two closest to the...

The specs were from 2004, so it's very possible that older modules may have been welded instead of VHB'd. They were prepared by a supplier to the government who was quoting Medic Master medium ambulances, so the odds are that they were cut & pasted from Medic Master standard specs. I'm willing...

I stand corrected - Thinking after the fact, 0.090" for the side walls didn't sound right, so I dug into my files, and here is what Medic Master did as their side wall standard construction. 0.125" is correct for the side walls, 0.090" is what they used for the inner panels on cabinet doors.
