    4x4 How important

Remember that 2wd with an open diff soon turns into 1wd if things get slippery, and even 4wd soon turns into 2wd without diff locks. A rear locker will get you out of a lot of trouble, almost as good as 4wd. I had a Nissan 2wd panel van in Africa, and fitted it with AT tyres, lifted up the...

    4x4 How important

This one reason for 4wd :) Try getting driving on or off any beach in 2WD, then you will see what 4wd is used for. Getting off the beach up the rather steep exist we had 4wd and rear diff lock in, even with the tyres down to 25psi. If you stick to the 'chicken bus' routes, all you need...

That's a good idea, like the outside one. My wife made one for the inside, exact shape of the windscreen.

tie road / track rod wear

No steering damper on my Unimog, nor any of the square cabs I have seen. I don,t get any kickback through the wheel at all, even driving into a deep rut at an angle. My Land Rover has one, and you can sure tell when it is not working properly, you can feel the wheel wanting to kick when you...

My wife has to get her Learner Permit for a truck licence before she can start to drive it. She will need to be able to drive, just in case something happens to me in a remote place.

We plan on having an insulated blanket as you suggest, we lots of 50mm insulation left over, we will make a nice cover for it and it can stay under the mattress when not in use. We use Velcro to attach things to the carpet, works great, so will just have a few tags of Velcro to hold it in...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

I decided to increase the rpm range a bit on our way home from the beach, just for a short while, still in running in mode but mog is getting stronger with each drive, easily held 100kph into a headwind. We also got some great footage of us driving down the beach with our little drone...

I'm down at the beach at the moment, so can't give you and exact dimension as we don't have a tape measure. The crawl through is around 1.2-1.3mm wide by 0.65m tall. It is narrower than just the two rear windows, I had to make a plate to cover part of the window opening, and it is taller...

I wasn't going to say anything about the Newell interior design, but it seems to reflect the American taste :) On the other end of the scale is the typical "caravan finish" My parents 1990's caravan looked like this, even down to the same upholstery material.

Yes, it goes in vertically, we have a lot of padding down the bottom, and some other supports attached to sides out of one of the camera bags that hold the body as well.

We wanted some more storage in the cab, especially for our cameras. Our main camera is quite big, and with the 70-210mm F2.8 lens on it, is quite long as well. I made a mock up of the console out of cardboard first, and drove around with it for a couple of days to see it if worked out...

I'll stick with multiplying for my way of calculating the power required, it is the way my industry does it. In the equations I am using it work out the "required power". The 30% drive train is a loss, thus should added to the power required. The 30% figure is just a guess, and could be...

In my formula, I multiply by 1.3 for the transmission loss. not divide by 0.7 I have not had the truck on a dyno yet, might do it when I get up around 5000km on the motor. When I got the fuel pump back, they told me they had set it up for 185hp, rather than 170hp which as the original spec...

Sorry, my spreadsheet is just a bunch of formulae, every time I check something, I lose the previous data. I think I used 0.08 for the Cd, given it was a modern truck, but as for the rest, I can't remember. :( Last one I did was for my own truck. You can check your formulae using these...

tie road / track rod wear

Did you buy genuine MB parts or at least decent German made OEM equivalents? Lemforder make the Unimog ones ( MB just repackage them) and they seem pretty substantial. I would check the weight, they might have put heavier springs in to compensate for the armour.

We will have to most likely, on the way to one of our favourite beaches is a RTA weighbridge where any vehicle over 4.5tons has to stop and could be weighed. I'm going to assume I will be stopped, just not worth taking the risk. Once we have loaded up all out tables and camping gear, then we...
