Around Australia in a Land Rover

It was around 3:00am when we start to hear the wind coming through the trees, by 4:00am if was freezing and the wind was howling, We had to close up the three sides of the tent, and the whole car shook every five minutes, needless to say we did not get much sleep. Our camp site was pretty well...

Around Australia in a Land Rover

The view from the smelter back to the town. We decided to stay there for the night, and do do a couple of photo shoots for the book as the sun was setting, as that would be the best light and hopefully the flies would have gone away. We decide to on one of the trails, and as it was still...

Ruins, Ruins and more flies. We left the Painted Desert, and headed up to Oodnadatta, we just had to see the famous 'Pink Roadhouse". Unfortunately is was a big disappointed, we were expecting a quirky but lively place, what we found was another roadhouse, and a very bored British backpacker...

On the drive out of town, the wind got worse. By the time we got to Arckaringa Station, the temperature had dropped, and the wind was howling. We decided to stay in the cabins. We got there early enough to head off to the "Painted Desert, about 20km up the road. We did the 2km walk, but it...

Cobber Pedy, and nice weird place When we finished the Anne Beadell Highway, we headed up to Coober Pedy, thinking we would stay one night, maybe two and then move on. We ended up staying there three nights and loved every bit of it, We stayed at the Desert Cave Hotel, and it was great. We...

Hi Rob, we have been building it for four years now. It will be another few months of work to finish it, but we decided to go on this trip, we needed the break from home for a while. We have a build thread here...

Around Australia in a Land Rover

Hi Rob, only the outside kitchen uses gas, we have a diesel stove and heater. My Mog is pretty small - not that much bigger than a Land Rover 130, that has a 3.3m wheel base and I have the 3.25m wheelbase with the narrow track as well. One of the rear storage bods behind the back wheels...

Around Australia in a Land Rover

HI Rob, I think it would be possible, but I don't think it is worth the risk in taking my Unimog. I have heard the Canning Stock route is also getting a bit closed in - so we will have to do it as soon as we are sure the Unimog is as reliable as the Land Rover has been. We only have one...

Around Australia in a Land Rover

From Emu to where we camped, the road was pretty bad, there was a type of soil, a rusty brown colour which seemed to solidify into corrugations about 2” deep with an almost vertical slope and spaced around 500mm apart. It was like driving over bricks. There were loads of section where...

Around Australia in a Land Rover

We got up early, and were on the road by around 8:00am, and straight away, the track going east from the camp ground got progressively worse. and once we were past the last shelter, the road deteriorated quickly, apparently it has not been maintained since the 1960’s. The track is really...

The Big Adventure - 1350km Anne Beadell Highway When we were planning our trip around Australia, we had a lot of detail of how to get across the top end, what we will do, and what to see, Once we got to Steep Point, it was a case of, where to now. Looking at the map, there were not that many...

Heading to Laverton We left the Kennedy Range National Park early in the morning, since our neighbours were not shy staying up late and talking really loud, we didn't worry about getting up at sunrise and packing the car. We headed off back down to Gascoyne Junction. There we discovered our...

Kennedy Range National Park We left Carnarvan, a little after 12:30, after restocking all of our supplies. This was the last big town we were planning on visiting until Cooper Pedy - in nine or ten days time. We filled up with fuel and water, and headed east. We had a nice tail wind the whole...

Going East, on the way home now. Getting to Steep point meant that now, we were basically on our way home. Trish was feeling pretty weird, very home sick and missed the kids, the cats and her bed ( probably in reverse order) We headed down back to civilisation, intending to stay at Cararang...

Around Australia in a Land Rover

Go West - but don't fall off the edge of Australia The kids left us still packing the car, we had taken nearly everything out and completely repacked it for the next part of the trip - Steep Point, the most westerly part of the Australian mainland. It was windy in Denham and Shark Bay, so we...

Around Australia in a Land Rover

The saga continues at Denham, where we renewed our wedding vows and had a family holiday, so not part of this trip report, but here is a few photos anyway. :) We had a great holiday, but having five other people around sure took a bit of getting used to. The wind and cold weather meant we...

Just a quick post to say that we have been to the very western most point of Australia, and have travelled halfway across the middle, I'm pretty far behind on trip posts, but hope to catch up once we get time to relax a bit - internet connection is few and far between, and when we did have some...

The self inflating mattress is a local home brand from BC stores, it squashed down quite easily, I just sit on top of the tent for a minute or tow, getting the ladder etc. When we open up the tent again, we just leave it to inflate, and do up the plugs when we are ready for bed.
