Cladding almost finished
The cladding is almost finished - just one complicated piece on the rear end and I'll have a box. I've left the floor off until I sort out all the mechanical bits - makes for easy access whilst making sure I have the clearance necessary.
First thing is the exhaust -...
I know I'll be there again - I was there last year and as a result bought my Unimog - I'm fast getting to the stage of needing to get some gear to fit out my truck and have a lot of decisions to make. It should be a very interesting show.
It has been a while since I posted the progress - so here is an update of where it's at.
All the welding is more of less done - even though every time I say that I end up adding another few bits of bracing. This weekend was not exception - when I trial fitted the aluminium sheet - I decided...
I found no problem with the plasma getting a great edge - I used a 50x50x5mm length of steel as a guide, and just held the torch against it - as long as I kept a steady pace - the cut was around 1mm wide and very smooth. After each cut I had to clean the contact point, and every so often...
I tried saws, angle grinder etc - pardon the pun - they just don't cut it compared to the plasma cutter. Whilst I'm not saying it not possible to work with them, but a cheap $200 e-bay special plasma cutter is a whole lot better.
Try doing this with a circular saw :sombrero:
I'm building my own rig for a round the world trip - I would love to see some more photos of that rig - there are some great ones on their website, but they are fairly small.
Any chance of asking them if you can take a few more photos - in particular the final installation of the heating...
Just want to make a recommendation to anyone thinking of building a camper and working with aluminium - get yourself a plasma cutter.
I am very impressed by my little e-bay special plasma cutter - when I did the roof sheets I used a thin grinder disc and wax like a lot of people recommended -...
Thanks for the heads up - I've found that the cure time in the batch I have is fairly consistent - it "skins over" in about 20 minutes, and and 3mm bead is dry in about 6 hours - well dry enough not to move. I only work on the truck on weekends mainly, so if I finish up on a Sunday, then it;'s a...
I glad to report that everything went well this weekend -and that I have all the roof sheets on. The method of placing the sheet on spacers and then adding the glue afterward worked well - I think I got a good bond on the sheets, and everything lines up properly. After 4-5 hours, I removed...
After discussion with the Sika technical people, I think that the "squeeze the glue into the gap" will work, with a bit of modification. I need to ensure that enough of the glue makes good contact, and that there are no voids which will weaken the stuff substantially. I will stick on the...
Started on the roof this weekend - and it is a lot more difficult than I thought.
First thing I had to do was to strip off the blue paint on the steel - and for a paint that is supposed to be "temporary to protect the steel during storage" it was very difficult to get off. Anyway, after a...
Thanks for the input guys.
Great tip on not using a mnaul gun - I've ordered a pneumatic caulking gun from Sika - surprisingly the cheapest of all the suppliers and as it is their "official" gun - it should work.
Thanks for the info on the Cleco's, I've ordered 4.8mm ones x 20 with the...
Thanks NTSQD - I can get 20 3.2mm or 4.8mm Clecos for around $50 delivered. I have 2mm sheeting, and the main frame is 2mm steep - add to that the 2mm rubber and I need it to have at least 6mm of grip. From the search I've done it seems that the can grip up to 1/4" so that's 6mm.
I will use...
Just wondering if anyone has any tips on using SIkaflex 252?
I'm just about to start on the cladding of my Unimog Camper - and will be using the 252 to stick the aluminium to the steel frame. I will be using a 2mm rubber every 100mm-200mm or so as a spacer to ensure I have at least a 2mm gap...
I put this up on the Unimog forum - and it was suggested I put it here as well - it is a basically just a bit of a rant about the complexities of getting things done here in Australia. But I would appreciate any help for someone who have built an expedition truck over here and what the pitfalls...
The common thing here in Australia is to have the lower third covered with a 10mm mesh screen - most trucks in the outback have them and I would not be driving something like a U500 without one - not unless you have a couple of spare windscreens in the back. Road trains throw up a tremendous...
I'm at the stage of sorting out all the various storage areas in my camper - spent last night with bits of cardboard and my Wolffpack travel boxes doing mock ups of the interior layout etc. I'm off to South Africa on a bit of a holiday, and will be buying another 10 Wolffpack boxes - I've...
My build on a U1250 has a two seater bench seat in the camper section - whilst the two rear passengers can see through the large crawl through, it is a bit restricted due to the sideways set-up. I could fit and additional seat opposite the bench seat, but don't really have the need.
Having the...
