Sleeping Bag & Pad Recommendations for Big Guys?

I'm amazed that you're comfortable on a 2" mattress at your size. Really? I'm half your size and that's too thin for me. I like about 3" on a cot and 4.5" on the ground. I find there's no added comfort beyond 4.5". If you sleep hot, why do you need a bag that you can zip up completely? If I...

    Electric chainsaw for specific purpose

I know there's a very long thread about this. Considering everything that was said in that thread, can anyone recommend a cordless chainsaw for my specific use? Given the very high cost of oil right now, I'd like to harvest some wood on my property for my wood stove. Here's what I'm looking for...

    Aftermarket/Third Party tarp/tent/awning poles

I love these poles: Cheap, lightweight (1.1 lbs each), sturdy, very adjustable, and you can run a cord through the holes at the top,

    What's your dream sleep system?

For a tent camper the sleep system consists of tent, cot, mattress, and sleeping bag. I have the perfect cot, mattress, and sleeping bag. It's the tent that doesn't exist on the market today. For a solo camper using a cot, a 3-person tent is ideal. 2Ps are never going to be tall enough. 4Ps are...

Mr heater buddy heaters in tents overnight

I realize that this is an old thread and just about everything has been said about the topic. I just want to add this. The OP didn't mention the temperature but he posted in October, which is not winter in the continental U.S. A simple nalgene bottle filled with hot water and the right sleeping...

Mr heater buddy heaters in tents overnight

I googled "carbon monoxide in tent" to find out if CO is a danger in a small closed tent without a stove. All the articles I found involved stoves and heaters. Do you have source with more information about this? Sounds important.

    Cots talk

If you're not concerned about weight or packed size, there are many cheaper cots available. Two things I would pay attention to are whether the top is very tight to start, and whether it sags over time. Even the top-rated Camptime Roll-a-Cots sag over time if you use them enough. The top is...

Hot tent micro stove in a paint can

Most hot tents seem to be tipis, which you can stand up in.

My personal answer to your question is a firm no, especially if you're older and need cushioning for your hip and shoulder joints, or if you're on the heavy side. The combination of a good mattress and a good cot will double your comfort compared to either one alone, in my opinion. Advantages...

Hot tent micro stove in a paint can

Have you seen the cheaper nylon hot tents? The Pomoloy Stove Hut 70 for $149 looks interesting: https://www.pomoly.com/STOVEHUT-70-Camping-Hot-Tent-%7C-4-Season-Shelter-for-Bushcrafter-%7C-POMOLY-New-Arrival-2021-p1832229.html Review:

If you're referring to my post about the Welodorir cot, note that I said in my post that I tried to include a link but it didn't work. I'll try a Bitly link: https://amzn.to/3I0yIng Yes, that works.

I think the best cot for the money is is the Camptime Roll-a-Cot. I would avoid the narrowest model as it doesn't fit a standard mattress very well---the mattress needs to fit between the rails, not on top of the rails, so you lose a couple of inches on each side of the cot for the rails. The...

How did Voyagers/HBC Outfitters do it?

I'm reading Thoreau's In the Maine Woods right now. The camping and travel conditions he describes are abominable. Like walking a whole day through a swamp when they lost the trail. Getting eaten alive by bugs. Sleeping on cedar boughs with, yup, one wool blanket (for 3 people!), under an open...

    Bent aluminum tent pole

Due to the bend the frame is out of kilter and the tent doesn't sit square to the ground.

How did Voyagers/HBC Outfitters do it?

Our notion of what is "tolerable" in the area of comfort has changed an awful lot even in the last 50 years. In the 1970s a 2" foam mattress was acceptable. Then came air mattresses. Then insulated air mattresses. Then thick, insulated, lightweight air mattresses. Today I wouldn't sleep on...

    Bent aluminum tent pole

Nope. It's the 4P version of the tent I modified, so it has larger poles, about 3/8" in diameter, hence the difficult of bending it.

Modification: Raised 3P tent to fit a high cot for 1 person

I posted about this a year or two ago but didn't get a chance to test the whole setup until today. Goal: A 3P tent that's tall enough to fit a 15" cot to avoid claustrophobia. There is no such tent on the market. The main point of the 15" cot is to not have to get down on the ground to get on...

Giving Up on Sleeping in My Vehicle

My next vehicle is going to be KIA Soul. I would completely remove the rear seat (seat and seat back) and the front passenger seat. I would build a sleeping platform with hatches that open to the space below for storage of things that don't get used often. I would sleep on the passenger side and...

    Bent aluminum tent pole

Actually parenthesis describes it exactly! The poles crosses over the top of the tent. It's supposed to be relatively flat. Instead it's the shape of a parenthesis. I already tried bending it by hand and it wouldn't budge.
