Slim battery needed, lithium or AGM

Another vote for DIY with 280 Ah cells and Overkill Solar BMS. The carpentry is harder than the electrics. With shipping delays, pay the extra for US sourced cells.

Dual battery maintainer with ‘smart’ isolator and daily driving.

While it appears that the focus of this thread has shifted to the challenges of using Odyssey batteries, I would merely note that, based on years of personal use, an intelligent relay is a great way to charge two lead acid batteries of grossly the same forumulation. (In my case, Delco...

    The Status of Overlanding Today

At the risk of being serious, they were Ray-Bans. Wore Ray-Bans until I first took the "crash bang" course and the driving instructors all raved about Serengeti Drivers glasses. Wore them until I needed prescriptions. :( Joke is that the first thing I say in my Culture Clash courses is "Take...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

Ouch! Certainly looks like a leak as I don't see any other oil that might have been blown onto the shock. What is that scar?

Recommendations for replacement Battery for Unimog 1300 in the USA

I am running two Interstate batteries. No idea about fit, but they have been good. Through a bout of stupidity, I killed them and replaced them. When one of the replacements was bad, they gave me two new ones, as the batteries were mounted in series. Very nice support.

Advantages of ground tents over camping in your vehicle.

I think this comes back to how you plan to use your vehicle. If your trips involve going to a fixed, remote point and remaining there more than overnight, then a conventional tent has a lot to recommend it. If your trips are more the "overlander" style, that is, moving on every day or two, and...

    The Status of Overlanding Today

Actually, I think you will find that the hard core/extended overlander population is larger than you think, but it doesn't really matter. The original question was whether the availability of toys for your vehicle diminished overlanding. My simple answer is "no"; I want the mud chuggers, off...

    The Status of Overlanding Today

Part of the issue is that, for me at least, "Overlanding" is not (necessarily) trail running or "four wheeling." It is long term, overland tourism, typically involving international travel in countries that are less visited because of less developed infrastructure. For Europeans and North...

Heated Lithium / LifePo4 House batteries in Northern (cold) climates

But I don't like beer! :( Got it. (I'm slow. At first I thought that you were talking about running errands in a winterized vehicle, then you mentioned skiing, so I got confused - happens at my age.) Methinks we are on the same page, but basically, if I am correct. -- Running errands is not...

Heated Lithium / LifePo4 House batteries in Northern (cold) climates

OK, now I'm curious. You don't use water for bathing and cooking? Or are you simply talking about running errands with the camper fully winterized?

Heated Lithium / LifePo4 House batteries in Northern (cold) climates

Having non-heat sensing chargers (REDARC and Victron) and non-self heating batteries (home brew) I would only repeat. For internally mounted batteries, keep your water safe and your batteries will be safe. That said, I kind of like my own idea of putting all of my charge sources on one bus that...

Talk to Battle Born directly. They also have a ton of information on this on their website. This is a good start: https://1t1pye1e13di20waq11old70-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/10012H-Heat-Enable-Instructions.pdf Also, in video form...

    The Status of Overlanding Today

Been doing this for about 50 years. I LUV all the gear heads, off road racers, etc., because, from time to time, they produce stuff I can use. Examples from my past include Vic Hickey's extra fuel tanks, Lonnie Woods (Rough Country) with his Blazer suspension, whoever invented roof top tents...

Heated Lithium / LifePo4 House batteries in Northern (cold) climates

There are some general points to cover about lithium iron batteries in the cold and then some specific points about Coguzzi's question. -- Most lithium iron installations are inside the heated camper, for obvious reasons. If you cannot do this (as was the case with my Tiger) then you have to...

Heated Lithium / LifePo4 House batteries in Northern (cold) climates

No it won't. Low temperature will disconnect the charge side, not the discharge side. Low voltage will disconnect the discharge side. Two separate circumstances. Of course, you have to have at least some charge in the battery before you start, but that is another issue. The Battle Born heater...

Heated Lithium / LifePo4 House batteries in Northern (cold) climates

Worth repeating, if only because one of our members here went to great, patient lengths to pound this into my dense skull, in most cases, the BMS can control charging and discharging separately. This is important because: -- If you have a cell or bank overvoltage, you want the battery to...

Heated Lithium / LifePo4 House batteries in Northern (cold) climates

One really nice thing about a lithium iron battery is that it does not need to be fully recharged. (Indeed, some will make an impassioned case against a full recharge on a regular basis.) In this sense, a lithium battery acts more like a fuel tank - 1/2 to 3/4 is just fine. Once you have your...

Heated Lithium / LifePo4 House batteries in Northern (cold) climates

Agreed. Which goes to my previous post. If you can solve the water freezing problem, lithium batteries are probably not an issue. FWIW - I first chatted with Four Wheel back in the days when it was still Dave Rowe's company! (Yeah, I'm ancient!)
