The general rule of thumb is 4.88's for 33's and 5.29 for anything bigger. If comes down to a trade off between available power vs. higher revs and worse gas mileage. I put 33's on my 3.0 4Runner before doing the 3.4 swap and barely used 4th gear. 5th might as well not have been there. 4.88's...
These happened to come up in my daily craigslist searching today. The seller said they are the stock 4.88's with 147k on the vehicle they came out of. It I wasn't so torn on what gears to go with I probably would have pulled the trigger...
Thanks, Nick! It's been a longer project than expected, but I still enjoy wrenching on it when I can. I'm up in North Seattle. Let me know if you ever want to hit the dirt.

I'm working on a fiberglass hood scoop to cover my hole right now. Here's a shot of the mold I made to lay up...
Got a few hours to work this afternoon and finished installing my water temp gauge. I still have some wiring cleanup, but in the mean time I'm now able to monitor my water temp as it enters the radiator. While working on this I threw my first check engine light since completing the swap. This...
Stoffregen, your '83 is a beautiful rig. That dash re-build was awesome.
I decided to order a temp gauge with a 1/8" NPT fitting rather than up size the threads. While I wait for the new sensor I started building a table to hold saws so I can have my bench top available for working. Hopefully...
Started working on installing an auxiliary temperature gauge tonight. I plan on using a joint pipe radiator coupling for the install. Unfortunately it's threaded for a 1/8 npt sensor and mine is 3/8. Looks like I have a good excuse to buy a tap set :)
In the mean time I checked my gauge...
Well, that 4 week garage project managed to stretch to a short 6 months. Yikes! It's finally just about back together, and I should be pulling the 4Runner back into the garage after the long weekend.
Luckily one of the reasons for the delay is the unreal nice summer we are having up in the NW...
