Previous owner of my truck put some crazy dark tint on every window, save for the windshield. +1000 cool points and comfort, -1500 points for being im-freaking-possible to see out in all but the brightest sunlight.
If I were to redo it, I'd do something light. 90%, maybe 80% tops.
PIAA LP 570
I purchased, received, and installed a set of PIAA LP 570 LED drive lights. First, I had to install the light tabs that the Addicted Offroad Guys sent me as a form of atonement for forgetting to weld the damned things on. A little primer and hammer finish paint later, the bumper was...
I wondered about that, too. I'd have thought that the dingle-dangle just sort of jutting out to the wings would be on the weak side, but I'm no engineer. It's definitely a simple bumper, but I was just looking for something to hold my winch that wouldn't totally ruin my approach angle or my wallet.
I think it'd hold up just fine if I hit a deer at low to moderate speeds. At highway speeds, I bet there'd be some bending of the tubes, but I'm fairly certain that the 1/4" thick plate steel that make up the winch mount and crossmember mating point will be A-OK. This particular bumper, however...
Dude, you have been BUSY! You've got a great combination of "right tool for the right job" and "homebrewed concoction" going on. It can be so easy to just go crazy with the debit card, but seeing projects like yours remind me that there are some things I shouldn't be afraid to make, myself.
I think that what you put into the truck and what you get out of the truck are equally important. Before I decided to start wrenching on my Tundra, I was eyeballing used Sportsmobiles. It became clear pretty quickly that those monthly payments would soon consume all of the money that could be...
Before modifications, I was getting about 15 mpg combined. It's down to 14 mpg now. Not a significant difference. The drop in mileage happened when I changed the bumper out.
Hey, I can crosspost into this thread! This is the War Wagon, my '05 Tundra AC. Build thread and spreadsheet of cost in my sig line.
I call these types of photos "selfies for my truck."

Sure is. Got the 5100's on all four corners and OME 886 springs. IMO, the spring rate on the 886's is a touch high. If you hit a dip a little too fast, the front end suspension bottoms out at full down travel instead of gently following the contour of the road. I can't comment on the 5100/stock...
Hey, I don't know if I've responded to this question yet. Short answer: I left the sway bar in. I haven't tried the ride without the sway bar, though.

Hey, I can finally post something worth sharing in this thread! This is the War Wagon, my '05 Tundra AC.

Haven't done a whole lot with the rig lately, but a loose load in the back is definitely a no-go. Half of the kit is anchored down by looping around the lower extension of the Xsporter rack and then attaching to one of tie-off points in the corner of the bed. It's pretty janky, and I didn't like...
What a drag!
Something I've noticed with my truck is that the more capable it is as an off-road overlanding rig, the worse it becomes at being an on-road rig. In particular, my fuel economy in this already-thirsty truck has dropped from 15 mpg average to roughly 14 mpg, mostly highway. It takes...
Thanks guys! This build is gonna take a turn in a slightly different direction soon. I realize that I've made my truck otherwise unusable as a utility vehicle, so I'm looking into ways to move things around relatively quickly and easily. More as I come up with a solution.
I just checked with my girlfriend. She says chicks don't dig hood pins. To be fair, these results are not typical. She also happens to be a good shooter and will eat any living, non-poisonous creature on Earth.
Winch Installation (WINCHSTALLATION!)
Hey guys, I'm back with an update on the build. I've installed my Smittybilt X20 10,000# winch with synthetic line. I chose this winch because it is the only one I found in its price range that had this load rating and an IP68 rating. Everything else I...
Thanks! There are a total of six bolts attaching the bumper to the crossmember. I've been waiting for the paint to finish curing on the touch-up I did, plus I've got a ton of stuff to do around the house, then I'll go in and Loc-tite the piss out of the mounting bolts and give them a good...
