Hello From NZ and help with a Big decision to make

Free advice is worth what you pay for it. I have owned two overland camper vans, a 2013 Tiger, based on a one ton Chevrolet pickup (ute, if you prefer) and now an XPCamper, built on a 1990 Mercedes 917. In the past, I have traveled in Chevrolet Blazers, Toyota Land Cruisers, and an Isuzu...

    Separating (composting) toilet pee tank?

I wonder how many Internet P1$$ing contests could be avoided if we simply called them "poopdrying" toilets, as opposed to "composting" toilets. The mind boggles!;)

    Separating (composting) toilet pee tank?

Grey water is an interesting subject. I suspect, without knowing, that most of the rules against dumping grey water start with the assumption that it has passed through the black water system, as is common in most RV's. (The usual rule is to dump black first and then grey to flush the system.)...

    Transmission Question

According to the folks at Terry Lee Enterprises, there is a form of brass shoe that presses against the ring gear to assure that it cannot skip under extreme load. Its adjustment screw is similar to the fill screw and, as a result, the brass shoe gets pressed too hard and eventually grinds up...

    Transmission Question

Since I bought my truck used and old, I am now on my second oil change in the gear box, transfer case, diffs, etc. From now on, will simply follow normal cycles. (N.B. the diffs were full of brass, a common problem when mechanics mistake the brass gear stay adjustment screw for the oil fill...

    automatic transsmition

Have had both over the years - back to GM's Turbo Hydromatic of the '70's. Assuming a decent transmission, either will work. -- Auto can be better in soft sand, but you can learn to manage the clutch with care. Some autos have a "snow" mode which starts in second to reduce the torque. Some...

    Tatra vs MB crewcab 6x6

6x6? For North America? Owning a MB 917AF 4x4 I would vote for a Ford/Chevrolet/RAM two ton or perhaps a larger International, 6x4 if you must have three axles. Despite your best efforts, you are going to be on motorways and paved roads 95% of the time and a top speed of 55 MPH at an ear...

Power systems (fuel) - help me decide

We are on our second camper with a composting toilet - did a lot of work to get rid of the cassette in the 917. "Mixed" reviews? The only bad reviews I have ever heard have been from people who have never actually used one. And yes, that is a snarky comment, but I get a bit tired of people...

Power systems (fuel) - help me decide

We need to use the same terms. When I talk about autonomy I tend to mean: -- Electricity - time between engine starts. In cold rain, we can go two to three days. If we run the engine during meal prep, then the only limit is the fuel tank, and, with sun, it is nearly unlimited, especially if we...

Power systems (fuel) - help me decide

Some random thoughts: -- Cooking all electric (dinner and breakfast) and running diesel heat all night runs us in the neighborhood of 135Ah. Others make get other numbers. For example, using LP gas for cooking may save you as much as 50A and, of course, the actual temperature will impact the...

Power systems (fuel) - help me decide

After the pain and cost of dealing with anti-freeze and the pain of recommissioning the truck for winter trips, we are simply leaving the Wesbasto on. The cost of a winter's worth of diesel is much less than one load of anti-freeze. Granted that Washington, DC doesn't often get below about 15F...

Power systems (fuel) - help me decide

Another option - kerosene. Burns hotter than diesel in diesel appliances and is less prone to sooting up at altitude. We use diesel heat/hot water and and cook electrically - diesel stoves are really annoying, but adding a kerosene tank, for our Webasto Dual Top, is in the future as it burns...

    Fast Turn Signal Blink

N.B. I have a variation of the same problem - the dash tell tales work with flashers, but not with turn signals. Annoying as you can't hear the click and all too often I drive down the road wasting blinker oil! :( Possible same issues - LED tail lights. And headlights, for that matter.

    Blue Sea ACR Wiring Question

Many (most?) alternators are internally set at 13.9v. This means that if all else fails, this is what they will put out. And this is not a bad voltage for most standard starter batteries. There was some chatter on MB forums, complaining of short battery life as MB started fitting batteries that...

    Blue Sea ACR Wiring Question

The issue is probably less one of amps, 55 is probably plenty, and more one of volts. Some MB run at 13.9v and, if that is the case, a deep cycle, lead acid battery is likely to be chronically undercharged. This may mean that you should look at a 20-40A battery to battery charger. The whole...
