Why not enhance rounder AT tires with snow chains and similar devices?

Tire is spinning, which means the driveline is spinning. All of a sudden, the tire stops. Dead. Will not turn....but the mass of the driveline is still spinning, and the engine and transmission are still putting energy into it...that leads to a LOT of sudden strain on the driveline.

    7800 Vs 7900?

The 8800 and 8900 also have a perfectly legal functionality that most rigs don't have. They can simultaneously listen to two separate frequencies. For instance: -Monitor a 2m repeater and a 70cm repeater at the same time. -Monitor the local 2m repeater while also scanning public safety...

Why not enhance rounder AT tires with snow chains and similar devices?

I believe that is true for the US, and I know that is true in parts of Canada. Sorry for the ambiguity. I was referring only to "chains" made with relatively small diameter steel cables, sometimes with "beads" or chunks of metal tubing on them for "bite". They usually look like this: I've...

    Thoughts on Toyos...widths...

Mods, feel free to move this if it belongs in the Jeep specific section. I've got an '08 JK Rubicon (4 door) with a 6 speed and 4.10's. At this time, I don't intend to re-gear. I'm going to replace my current 32X10.5R17 (can't remember the metric size) BFG mud terrains some time in the next 6...

    small generator

Your 750W space heater might draw more than that when it's starting up. Another thing to keep in mind is that two strokes tend to be less civilized than four stroke engines. They are normally louder, they require a gas/oil mix, and they need more maintenance in the long run than a four stroke...

    Current price on M101CDN?

He's asking $1100 Canadian. I've only got two pictures to go by, but the rust looks to only be surface rust. I can see a bit on the bottom rear seam of the tub, and some on the front portion of the passenger side fender. The tub would be a no-brainer for me, as I do own a grinder and would...

    Garvin Wilderness EXT bumper ?s

I haven't seen it in person, only on the net. I have a friend with a Garvin rack on the back of his TJ. Other than needing ground straps to provide a good RF ground, he's happy with it. It doesn't look to be built anywhere near as stoutly as many of the other offerings (LOD, Expedition One...

    Current price on M101CDN?

Hi folks I tried a search, but the most recent thread I could find with a similar suggested price was dated from '07. What is a fair price for an M101CDN with some surface rust on the fenders and inside the box at the rear? It is otherwise in original condition - still has military tires and...

just did a week of cold weather camping

+1 on that. My job has taken me to the southern end of Iran. In August, it's about 40 to 43 degrees celcius here during the day, with humidity that normally at least 75%. I'll take -40 over that any day of the week.

    JK and WJ Axle Geometry

XJ's have rear leaf springs. JK's have rear coil springs. Even if track width was the same (JK's are wider), the difference in springs would mean that it couldn't be a straight swap. It may be a relatively "easy" swap, but you're still going to be making some substantial changes to either the...

    Wife's Modest KJ Build

You know, from that angle you KJ looks a little like an XJ with IFS :sombrero: That's a neat build-up. It's unfortunate that so few people mod their KJ's. The solid axle purist part of me is choking right now, but for a vehicle that sees lots of pavement IFS isn't such a bad choice.

Interesting reading, Bytehoven. If Eton's lockers are any indication, they probably build a good ELSD.

Quadra Drive II in Current Jeeps

I have a sneaking suspicion that brake inputs are involved in "locking" the differentials. If they're not, locking up a diff while under load would probably require some pretty high-end viscous coupling technology. That'd kick the Grand Cherokee price tag up even higher than it currently is...

    12k synthetic line???

+1 on the safety thimble. I have one as well, and I don't think that I'll ever go back to a conventional hook or just a plain thimble. It's safer for your hands, it's more secure while pulling, and it's light weight reduces the danger if another part of the recovery system breaks loose. You can...

Quadra Drive II in Current Jeeps

A TJ Rubicon, and a JK Rubicon unlimited. The other JK Unlimited that got stuck...she didn't engage the lockers until she started having problems. I was successful because I used a little bit of momentum to my advantage, and engaged my lockers when I decided that I would need them, instead of...

Quadra Drive II in Current Jeeps

I'm not slagging the ELSD system. For most drivers it's probably a far better choice than traditional 4WD and selectable lockers. It will provide better performance in most driving situations. BUT For someone that has solid on and off road driving skills and has learned what they and their...
