You were just mentioning you wanted reliability and are shopping some somewhat “experienced” platforms.
At the age of some of those listed past owner care is almost going to have more to do with reliability than the original design.
FWIW I don't think you will be able to jump in any 20+ year old vehicle and expect it to be turn key and ready to go. You are going to have repairs no matter what badge is on the grille.
Why no 4Runner? Not long enough? I would think it would be at least comparable to the XJ.
Has been a lot of progress and a little side adventure.
For the side adventure I am an admin on a Ranger site, another admin contacted me he had a slide in camper made for a longbed Ranger. He had gone to a Supercab (only has a shortbed available) and was getting old enough he didn't think he...
I like it, it looks sharp.
Not crazy about a BMW diesel engine though... hopefully they have a gas option for NA.
A GM V8 engine would be awesome for parts/technical support.
I am not really interested in something like that (new 4dr SUV just for overlanding/offroading) it but it is neat...
This is hilarious.
Toyota made trucks that were very inferior from a corrosion standpoint compared to domestic trucks because they had the frames and beds made in the US... like domestic trucks?
Toyota R&D had to catch up on how to build things that last in markets with treated roads. If they...
For the Explorer the M5ODR1 is a pretty good trans, watch for it being a greaseball, there are rubber plugs in the shift rails that go bad and leak oil out. Easy fix if you catch it early, replace the rubber plugs with either new ones or metal expansion plugs. It takes ATF for fluid.
If you...
Ram uses the same NP-271 or NP-273 t-case as a Super Duty.
The book for our '04 here at work calls for Mercon. They kinda horsed around with new formulations of Mercon but it isn't that hard to call the dealer and ask. Mercon V was bad, they made a special "Transfer Case Fluid" during that...
They rust under the rockers under the back doors with age. If it is rusty back there it probably isn't low mile. Same goes for if the pad on the brake pedal is worn down to steel. Nobody thinks to replace that. Or if they it would be new which would also stick out. Same goes for other wear...
So things can break if you use the wrong fluid? That is a heck of a newsflash. It is too bad they don't spec something every gas station in the US has on the shelf... like ATF.
Fun fact: newer Tundras have a Borg-Warner t-case that takes a weird straight 75w oil. Not ATF like what is readily...
The 7.3 was neither designed or built by Ford... and yes they love to mark their territory.
Never heard of the transfer case wobble thing, that is a new one on me. The ZF-5 is a pretty good trans and same goes for the t-cases of the era.
Right now I have a 150k Ford in my garage (which...
I have been toying with adding a window unit to my '84 Skamper 072S. For the typical family "run to the lake and camp" camping. For so much of the camping season here it is way too hot/humid to enjoy camping. Like right now it is 91* with a feel like temp of 98*...
I am thinking of the usual...
I don't get any enjoyment out of it.
When I need to do tight manuvering around my barnlot or whatever... my Ranger blows my F-150 away. I don't even dink with the big truck (which is tiny compared to those being discussed here)
Ram is 47.9' curb tocurb for a crew cab shortbox, Ford is 53'. Test drive both and see how they compare. The Ford bed is a little longer, the cab may be too.

I think the cam statement was an answer to me.
I kinda agree, nobody in 2020 should be replacing a camshaft in a remotely late model engine. IMO roller cam camshafts should last pretty much forever.
Just trying to get a feel for the cam issue mentioned earlier. I didn't know if yours was on borrowed time or where it was at.
5 years old and 56k miles is still pretty young to me.
Make sure whoever you are comparing them is measuring it the same way. Some measure curb to curb as in the the amount of space you can turn inside of and others measure how how tight you can turn around something, like if you was turning around a building.
Kind of a ID vs OD thing.
A quick...
