Those magical icy roads that only exist where you are....got it....
It does work for me. I've driven my old flat fender on LOTS of icy, snowy, winter roads. It's actually VERY fun in those conditions.
I routinely drive it around on the worst of the worst days just for fun to pull people out of...
Oem manufacturers don't let you use them in high range either. Locking diffs could never be useful in high range.....sure....
They have to build to the lowest possible driver skill level because of threads like this. I can't count the times I've had to coach new Rubicon owners on the trail in...
It's a video game. Two posts ago you said it was a locked front selectable locker? I can't take you seriously when the best example you have is a crappy one like this. As others have mentioned, it does take some driver skill to operate a vehicle. Mash the gas and expect miracles isn't what I...
Did you even watch the video you posted? It shows nothing relevant to real life.
Short version......drive really fast off a cliff. There is nothing technical or realistic about it.
I honestly can't take you seriously if this is your only argument.
Ohhhhhhh......so we should build our vehicles for the lowest common denominator just in case? Got it. That makes perfect sense.
Maybe you should just buy what you need off the dealer lot. That sounds pretty safe for you.
I'm interested in discovering and passing on knowledge in this sport...
I will go so far as to say that an automatic front locker disappears completely as soon as you disconnect power to the front axle. Locking hubs really don't seem to make any difference in the transparency of the locker. They do save some wear and tear on the front axle in general which is nice...
Me? I'm not the one obsessing about glare ice conditions. I'm not stuck on anything. I have actually personally tried many different combos. I continue to test all the different combos I can find to try and make better ones. I've said it more than once, if open/open is enough for you by all...
I mean......if you want to obsess about winter roads and sliding around....
If you just run 2wd with an open differential then you are going to probably have 3 other tires to hold your vehicle in place from slipping sideways.
That sounds like the safest option by your current logic.
Yes, the tires go where you point them. REAR tires always want to go straight regardless of the locker. Adding a rear locker, be it an automatic, spool, or whatever, will cause the vehicle to understeer more. Nobody has been debating that. That is why I like a rear selectable locker.
The front...
Been there, done that. I am the guy that shows up to work on days to locked doors because the roads where 'so bad' for everyone else.
So basically you would rather go nowhere vs having a chance to go somewhere?
I agree a REAR full time locker can be a headache. That is why I don't run one. The...
.....and yet, I've done it for years and years. I grew up in Idaho. I currently live in Colorado. I have traveled to just about every part of the US over the years. I have driven on bad winter roads all my life with just about every combination of lockers possible. Have you?
I currently own...
Up to 45-50mph, in a variety of conditions. I've been on icy roads so bad, that if you stopped, the vehicle just got blown sideways in the wind.
I've tried both combinations personally. I don't why you don't seem to realize that.
I've driven on bad winter roads for decades. I've driven them...
Do what works for you.
In general, the front axle goes where you point it. There rear axle pushes the car straight because it is always pointed perpendicular to the vehicle centerline ( generally, not going to get into bad positive roll axis suspension setups ). Unlock the rear axle, and then...
You are obviously not really reading anything I have been writing. If you just want to sit on your hands and not try to learn anything that is on you.
I agree that automatic REAR lockers suck. I hate them. I would never run one. An automatic FRONT locker however, when used in conjunction with a...
