You can find a good, already sorted out, 7.3 diesel if you look hard enough in your price range. I flew in to AZ to get mine and the big items had already been done. If you can’t find that I would look at the newer v10s as was already suggested. There is a YouTube video for just about...
Great design. I would like to build something similar but with hard folding walls for the pop up. Save a little money and go with a Buddy heater and a propane water heater. spent a year in school surfing half moon on weekends, I would be so cold that I couldn’t even get the keys in the door...
I have a Powerline 2 batt./1 alt. 130amp battery isolator and a battery combiner switch from some old boat projects. Can I use a 1 alternator isolator in a 2 alternator set up? Does it matter which engine battery I go off, is there a charge sequence for the batteries or does one alternator go...
For me, the take away from this thread is that emissions standards put on newer diesels have leveled the field when compared to gas. I think the OP made the right choice for his needs and if I was ever to get rid of my 7.3 I don’t think I could justify a new diesel.
I’ve been charged at by a male grizzly, corner by a mother grizzly and her cub, harassed by black bears and never a shot or bear spray fired. Had a guy in Alaska fire off multiple rounds to scare off a bear, just aggravated it, still ate his lunch. If you are camping and a bear goes through...
That is a good article but I think it makes a good case as an overland/personal truck. The cost of ownership is really not all that much more considering the extra torque and resale value of a non-fleet recreation diesel.
A few bucks more for a diesel tank but near twice the mpg/range when loaded up. That means something to a lot of people who adventure travel. Agree with the other poster that it doesn’t pencil out with modern diesels but a warranty and smiles per gallon do have value.
Actually I was replying to the poster who said it was a dollar more per gallon. Where I live, in CA, that is not the case as my screen shot shows. Point being that cost of fuel is barely a factor for some. OP said that it is significantly more expensive where he lives so I’ll give you that...
In San Diego it’s usually about the price of regular. So statewide cost is about 1.50 more per tank not a dollar more per gallon as the other poster stated.
Where is it a dollar more? Here in CA it’s the cheapest gas even with a .40 tax added to it. Needs more oil but needs less frequent changes. Everything else is pretty much the same except for injectors that last a few hundred thousand miles. Not sure why nobody can understand that the cost...
Diesel trucks depreciate way less than a comparable gasser. You get that upfront money back in resell, the longer you keep the diesel the farther ahead of the same gasser you become.
2003 and older diesels in California just get a visual inspection. My 7.3 has tons of mods, is straight piped, and passes no problem.
Brings up a point that has yet to be addressed. From 2003 up until recently, diesel trucks were far from a good value. You are either looking at a big price...
Not if you factor in the higher resale. What you spend on it - what you sell it for. You will get a whole lot more money out a diesel with 100k on it compared to a gasser.
Your right that is a good option you don’t see allot of. What steers me clear is the lack of aftermarket support. I have talked to one person with the Nissan Titan cummins and he was happy.
I agree with you guys on the Nissan. Seems to be a good truck with a great warranty. Don’t know if it’s...
Love my hydra, like a new truck. I like the 60 hp performance tune and seem to get the best mpg with it when driving light footed. The 60 hp eco tune is nice too, no smoke. Watch your EGTs on the 80hp tunes when climbing.
