ThIs is at full metal to metal bump with all the bumpstops removed. I doubt it could ever get this compressed once I put bumpstops back in it. Ride height might be as much as 7 inches taller depending on final weight.
I've been running a similar winch setup on my flat fender with good luck. It...
Only a bit more today.....I ran out of welding gas and decided to call it a day.
This is basically what the front bumper is going to look like. I still need to add on all the reinforcement plates to the frame. Overall I am pretty happy with it. The winch is just low enough the top sits...
Front bumper part two...
Most of the front bumper and winch mount is done. Now I can start trimming the frame to set the final position of the bumper. It is going to be dropped down about 2" into the rail. The remaining height of the frame will be taper cut. I will be making a bunch of...
Making progress....
I finished up the frame mount for they assist ram. I plated the frame with 10 gauge around 3 sides. I also tied it into the grill crossmember. I don't think it is going to go anywhere now ever.
This car is getting something a little bit different for recovery points...
Tie rods last a long time compared to most rod ends at least as far as wear. A rod end might be ultimately stronger. I just can't stand the noise they end up making. I enjoy trying new.....or is it old?.....things.
The wheels are Trail Gear Creeper beadlocks. 17x9 with 3.75 backspacing.
I hope the TRE idea works out on the assist ram. The adjuster also seems to be really handy also since it helps dial everything in as far as stroke and throw.
Moving along.....
I was able to get a rough mockup done on the hydro assist ram in preparation for the positioning of the winch/bumper mounting. Overall it ended up working out really well! The TRE's where a bit different to work with. I ended up making a mini-mount for the fixed end of the...
Something new....
I am trying something a bit different on mounting a hydro assist ram. The 80-series chassis has a factory steering stabilizer that is mounted with a metal tapered bushing at the pitman arm TRE. After doing a bit of digging around I found an AFCO GM(?) TRE that would screw...
I'm not a huge fan of the modern LED headlight look, but I had them sitting around. I figured I would give them a try. While I don't love the look, the quality of lighting should be fantastic.
Some metal origami today.
There was a big hole on the sides of the radiator where fresh air could bypass the radiator ( on both sides ). I folded up a piece of metal that would fill up most of that space. This bracket will also help brace the upper radiator mount. I will add a section of...
I get them in a bulk pack from McMaster-Carr.
https://www.mcmaster.com/#weld-nuts/=167saje
They have metric versions too. I am using M6 versions. That seems like a good size to replicate other stuff on the Toyota body.
A good big bite today...
I think this is the most complete the front end has been so far. I was able to tack weld the upper mount scoop in place. I made the lower air damn that bolts to the lower radiator mounts. I mounted the headlight adjusters in the FJ40 grille. The headlights where...
Just a little bit of an experiment....
I decided to try something different to stiffen up the upper grille braces. I added a small 1/2" wide flange at 45 degrees to the inside of the triangle shape. That REALLY stiffened up the panel and took out a decent mount of weight too.
These will be...
I had a little bout of airflow OCD....
I made a small scoop to direct the air flowing coming from the hood gap into the radiator. It should also prevent the re-circulation of hot air from under the engine compartment in this area. I also added the outer holes into the upper radiator mount for...
Finally some progress worth posting...
I was able to finish up most of the upper and lower radiator mounts. Since the grille is hard mounted to the frame I attached the lower radiator mounts to the new crossmember I added under the grille. That crossmember also houses the power steering...
Only a few little brackets tonight....
The start of the lower radiator mounts. These will bolt into the new crossmember under the grille.
Folding a U-shape that fits inside another U-shape that you folded is harder than I thought it would be....
Yup, something about the 8274 is just over-appealing. Maybe it is because they are one of the only winches heavily supported in the aftermarket which you can mod to the moon....
People seem to be really proud of FJ40s, that is for sure. Hunting parts for this build gets a little old, that is...
