Ok.....time to start sticking the parts of the grill back together....
Here is where I had to stop for the evening.
I was able to get all the big parts back together again. The outside of the blue tape is going to be the new shape. Next I need to trim down the extra bits. Then I will...
Time to mess with something new!
I am going to need to remake the shape of the grill.....why not....
Generally, I want to eliminate the 'corners' below the headlights by moving them in about 4.38" and changing the shape to a trapezoid. This will leave the top and the bottom of the grill the...
I'm going to have to do something for access to the transfer case shift linkage for sure. I have the air shift center diff stuff in the same area. Beyond that I just don't know. Pulling the tunnel isn't too hard for bigger jobs. I'm thinking I might be able to provide access via some oversize...
The passenger seat mount is all done. Yipee. Man that feels good. I don't know what it is about being able to sit in the thing for the 1st time knowing what the seat will feel like....but it always does it for me...
Seat all the way back.....
Seat all the way forward. I am happy my...
I short but productive evening...
I was able to 95% finish all the brackets for the passenger seat mount. It ended up being a little more complex than the drivers side because of the transfer case portion of the tunnel.
I had to add one more mounting hole, for a total of 3, on the...
One seat is mounted! That felt like a big bite that I didn't chew all the way....
I have three of the floor mounts that can be the same basic bracket. I had posted the chipboard pattern before. Cutting multiples of the same bracket is always a ton of fun. I don't really mind making singles...
I'm not sure how fancy I am going to get with the interior. If I am happy with the design of everything I might have it sprayed in bedliner. Then perhaps have some carpet panels that clip into place for the critical areas. I'm not sure. I do want the interior to remain rather easy to clean and...
It is actually the face off of a soft hammer. I pullet it off and turned it to fit in the case. If I had to guess, it is some kind of HDPE material...maybe nylon.
If you look into flow forming with an rivet gun, you can find some information in the hot rod community.
My bite for the day...
The heater is making a difference in the shop. It was down to about 20F and I was able to come home and work without preheating the area.
I was able to bend all the seat brackets up and install a pair on the drivers seat for a test fit. Overall it worked out...
Yeah, my seats are lower than stock I think. I basically mounted them as low as practical based of the passenger seat slider clearing the transfer case hump on the tunnel.
I was laying awake last night thinking about that passenger side inner bracket. Basically, I think I am going to have a...
My evening progress...
I put the seats back in and set them in place with the complete tunnel so I could pattern out the brackets. It wasn't as simple as I thought it was going to be. There are a few places where the seat slider is pretty tight on things.
I was just going to make a big...
Yup, I will take my time welding it to minimize distortion. I may try tig'n it.
I tried to minimize the weld seam as much as I could, if I didn't have the new press brake it would have been WAY worse.
How do you eat an elephant.....one bite at a time....
I was finally able to complete the mockup on the complete transmission tunnel. I have way more time in this than I want to admit, but I think it turned out pretty well. It is a little more square than I wanted at the rear of the...
!st part of the tunnel done...
This is one piece of metal with 6 bends....fun.
Dang it! I don't have a big enough piece to do the main part of the tunnel yet. I will have to work on the other smaller sections for the holiday.
Ok....now back to our regularly scheduled programming....
The new thing is pretty much done.
60" wide bending capability with laminated modular tooling. It takes about 5 minutes to collapse the upper die truss. With the uppaer truss down the entire unit will fit under my large welding table...
I will be back at it soon. I had to stop and build some tools to facilitate a lot of upcoming parts of the project. The short version, I am building a 60" wide press brake to allow me to form larger panels in one part to help eliminate welding. This should save me a lot of work/money on stuff...
I'm honestly not sure yet. The passenger inside seat mount has to go on the tunnel for sure. Where to split it would be the other question. And where I should stick an access panel or two.
You still wouldn't have to have an SAE wrench. I am just waiting for that.....crossover head/thread stuff.
Metric consistency is enough for me. I don't think I am going to trim the wrench/socket set down to only include sizes based on bolt heads.
I see that a lot on the new GM stuff also. Odd...
I'm still looking for the JIS wrenches and sockets in my box?
For me, it is about trying to make the vehicle as consistent as possible so that the tool kit can be trimmed down in weight and bulk.
It is also nice for whomever has to work on it in the future. Even if some of the hardware is a...
