Yeah they're still solid engines for their day, but I don't think they deserve their "unkillable" legend. They're very much killable.
I also still lke the 1fz-fe even with all its flaws and quirks, but people talk about them like they were hand-built by angels or something.
Was that a 22re? That has to be one of the most overrated engines. They had timing chain issues as well, not uncommon to see them with burnt valves and dead cylinders as well.
I think the transmissions in those are actually Aisin units, usually pretty stout. but yea with old jeeps there's a lot of little nickel and dime repairs, but is it really that much worse than an old Toyota?
Same with old Land Rovers like The Disco 1. I question whether they're really as bad as...
I think the notion of new cars constantly having electrical gremlins might be a bit overblown, and anyway that's what a warranty is for.
At least I wouldn't be nervous taking a new car on a longer trip like I am with the LC. I've got another unexplained coolant loss after replacing nearly all...
I thought the TJs were supposed to be better with that bombproof 4.0 straight six, kind of like a 3FE but more power. Sure the Dana 30s aren't great, but there's not that much to go wrong on one of those.
Yea I can’t stand autos but I made an exception for the FZJ80 because of the solid axle and beefy frame which doesn’t seem to be nearly as rust prone as Tacomas or 4Runners of the same vintage. I think at the end of the day I’d still rather be in a manual Tacoma or 4Runner though.
An older...
It’s not hard necessarily, but it can be a drain in your time and energy. A lot of the jobs are really fiddly and time-consuming, and they never seem to go off without a hitch.
Right now I’ve got an upper pan seal leak which is a bit over my head, and the apartment parking lot isnt a conducive...
Yea the second gen just had the SMOD issue and some timing chain failures I think. Other than that and raltoveky weak diffs, I think they’re pretty solid. In fact a 2013-14 Pro4X model would be up there on my list. I know they don’t have the same build quality as a LC, but they also aren’t as...
Yeah the VG33 is a solid engine but it’s kind of a PITA to work on. You can easily spend the value of the car repairing those if you don’t wanna fix it yourself.
I still think the Xterra can be a solid budget platform though, if you find the rare one that hasn’t been flogged or neglected most...
In general I try to avoid debt just to simplify things, but it can be smarter it finance a car even when you have plenty of money to buy it in cash if the interest on the loan is less than the returns it’d make in a mutual fund for example. As long as you’re not spending money that doesn’t exist.
In a way the best cure for high car prices are higher car prices. Especially now that interest rates are going up, I don't think people are going to keep tolerating these inflated prices much longer, or I hope not at least.
Yeah I am a bit burnt out I suppose. It's hard for me to just get rid of the Cruiser though, especially since I'd be taking a loss on it at this point.
It can get overwhelming with the LC, since it never seems to be just one part tat goes bad; it's at the pint where whole systems need...
The 3RZ tends to burn out valves though if you don't adjust them every 60k or so. I wouldn't buy another without a compression and leakdown test since most people seem to neglect this maintenance.
Apparently it's not uncommon for them to crack heads either, though this may also be more to do...
I don’t have new car money being in grad school, and even if I did I’m not big on dumping a lot of money into a vehicle. I had a 96 Camry when I lived in Tasmania and it cost me all of $1000 USD to run for a whole year, including the purchase price, then I sold it and almost made all that money...
