What’s your evidence for fixing up an old Land Cruiser being 3x the new equivalent.
lets say a new 4Runner goes for 50k in this market; so baselining an 80 series costs 150 grand?
I definitely want something with a manual trans after driving this slushbox in the 80 series. I've considered older Xterras, but they all seem really neglected and on their last legs. Newer Xterras would be decent, but you pay a premium for a nice one with a manual, like the layer Pro-4xs, also...
I'm tired of dealing with all the headaches associated with older 4x4 trucks like my current 1997 Land Cruiser and my old 1998 Tacoma. for some reason it seems like these older trucks are just endless moneypits and always cost an arm and a leg to fix. I like Tacomas, but the frames are junk and...
I think it's a misconception that every American wants a bougie, fully-loaded luxury behemoth.
Plenty of stripped-down work trucks around here, and look at the market for old basic Toyota pickups.
I always thought Toyota would've made a killing if they had given us the SWB FZJ70 series, maybe with the lighter duty axles to keep costs down.
Look at all the fully loaded Rubicons flying off the lots and tell me they wouldn't have sold here.
I do a lot of pretty tight tracks in the Ozarks.
That one tacomaworld thread had me concerned as it suggested the long wheelbase performed very poorly off road
I'm looking at a few extracab Tacomas to replace my old single cab with a rusted frame.
The extra space would be nice, but how much off-road capability would I be losing with the longer wheelbase (almost 20'' more)?
I saw this thread on a popular forum claiming the shorter wheelbase regular...
Yeah the rack and pinion is a definite weak point though, along with the crappy metallurgy of the frame. As much as I might complain about the old Cruiser, I’d be very sad to see that old hunk go. I wish I could afford to run both..
My dream configuration is a short wheelbase 70 series with a 5 speed manual and 1fz-fe. But most of those are in SA or the GCC, where they often have sketchy maintenance histories as I understand it. Still, that's my dream rig.
I would attempt an h151 swap into my Cruiser if it weren't so...
I don't mean to say they are overrated as a whole. But I think the combination of the antique 4 speed auto, tacky leather/wood trim interior, and no diesel option make for a less-than ideal platform. If I had a cloth interior 5 speed model, I'd probably be raving right now.
Also, by "overrated"...
Yes, the J80 was designed for people in remote parts of the world who actually need all that durability and off-road ruggedness.
The Tacoma was designed as a fun DD/weekend warrior-type vehicle for North Americans, and it shows in the driving experience and overall livability of the two vehicles.
Ok, so I've been kinda exaggerating with my negative comments lately, but this is largely due to my own frustration on getting over my head with it. I wouldn't say I hate it at all: I still appreciate the overbuilt feel of it and the 90s cool-factor. And I trust it enough to drive it 40 miles...
The thing is I don't have a dolly or body hammer to deal with the dent and the rust on the rear tailgate is the kind of thing I'll never get around to. Maybe I could do a deep clean and wax?
I disagree that 9500 is asking way too much though: it's still significantly less than what I have in...
I've been asking 9500 which is less than what I have in it. I guess I just overpayed over the summer and I'm totally underwater on it now.
I think it's moreso the aesthetic flaws than are turning buyers off.
Still working on selling the LC but I can't seem to give it away. Buying this thing might be the most catastrophically stupid decision I've ever made.
I really do not get the excitement over the 80 series at this point. I can't wait to get back into a Tacoma or similar. After all, nobody...
