    109 Expedition rig build

The only gas tank available for these trucks anymore is an aftermarket piece. They're really lousy but there's not much else you can do short of making one yourself. I still need to put a bulkhead fitting in it for the return line.

How much rough road can the Disco take?

Come on over! I'll pick you up at the airport. You drive the 88" and I'll take the 109. I'm always looking for a travel partner. Fair enough. You err on the side of caution and I will always respect that. Isn't this board great?! Wish everyone could all get along like this in the real...

    109 Expedition rig build

Ok, back at it.... Got the tank in and waiting for fittings to plumb it up. Cut the steering column, bushed it and put on the universal. Got the slip shaft cut and fitted to the lower universal. The saddle on the bottom of the column will fasten to the brake tower. All fits well. Painted...

How much rough road can the Disco take?

I don't understand. Canada's speed limit on the 401, they're biggest highway is 100km. They're a pretty conservative country when it comes to speed limits. The posted speed limit on the Trans Taiga and the Route Du Nord is 80km. The Trans-Labrador highway is constructed to be an 80km road...

How much rough road can the Disco take?

The posted limit on the Trans Taiga and Route Du Nord is 80kph or 50mph. Driving 50-55 on a gravel road like this is less dangerous than driving a highway at 65 in the dark, in the rain. Pay attention, stay alert and it's really fine. I quite enjoyed driving these roads at these speeds. Keep...

How much rough road can the Disco take?

I was running 18lbs in the front and 24lbs in the back. I was loaded pretty heavy and keep in mind I run leaf springs.

How much rough road can the Disco take?

You simply can't drive a corrugated road at anything above ~15mph or below ~45mph...It can't be done. You'll tear your truck apart, knock your teeth out and have a mutiny on board from your passengers. In short order you'll break springs, burn out the shocks, rattle every body panel off, etc...

How much rough road can the Disco take?

Did 1100 miles in northern Quebec this past summer. Up to Radisson via Chibougamau and then out to Caniapiscau. Low tire pressure helps significantly as does traveling at speed. You'll get a "feel" for the road after a while. When you're on it, increase speed through the road feeling...

    New toy

Come on, at least put a selectable locker in the rear! And I think 35-splines will be just fine. Don't imagine you'll be bashing this truck too hard. The cable lockers are $160 a shot and really, there isn't any trouble with the electric actuator. I'll stick with what I know. I don't mind...

    New toy

I forgot you have a Sals in the back. Also wasn’t thinking about the high-pinion up front. I run low-pinion diffs in the front of mine to help make room for the Mercedes oil pan. There have been arguments on the pros and cons of putting the high-pinion up front. Some say they’re weaker than...

    109 Expedition rig build

No work this weekend. A trip up Race Brook Falls trail and south on the Appalachian Trail to Sages Ravine. Lots of ice! Three troopers: Notice the flask! Maggie, the black dog is 11 and lives for this stuff. She doesn't carry a pack anymore but is game for anything. A little help...

Um...I knew that! Why not a pair of 4:56? A factory ratio and though not as easy to find, they're not impossible. Save yourself the expense of building a set of 4:88s jim

    109 Expedition rig build

Alright, I'm going home now. We're doing 18 miles of the Appalachian Trail tomorrow and I haven't even packed my pack yet. Finished the bracing, bolted the head pipe up and started working back. There will be a stainless muffler under the passenger's floor and it will dump out right in front...

    109 Expedition rig build

After about 50 phone calls trying to find the right pipe, two sets of pipe and elbows returned to McMaster Carr, driving the guys at Napa nuts and about four hours of work I'm almost done with the head pipe for the exhaust. It's 2.5" stainless and comes directly off the turbo. I still need to...

Another that understands the value of front mud flaps. I learned the hard way. Looking good, Keith, but that front diff makes me shudder man! I hope that is going by the wayside soon.

    Spring questions

I run parabolics in my 88” and have since it was built in ’00. Many people, including TeriAnn, whose opinion I respect don’t like parabolic springs. I can say almost nothing bad about then and have had almost no trouble. I did bend a front spring once years ago when I was really hammering on...
