    Rango.....1942 Willys MB

The angle was 3/16" or better. I think the bottoms where 1/4 or 5/16. I really like them so far. I have about 2 years on them now without any issues. It really seems to smooth up the bottom of the axle with a SUA which I really think is worth it. SUA flat works, especially in lower stance...

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

Just to clarify.... This was my last trip. Drive 1000 miles across the country, wheel some remote backcountry in the snow for 300 miles, drive another 1000 miles back home. http://2000milesofnervousnirvana.blogspot.com/ There is a thread floating around here too.

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

" Sorry, 33's won't come even close to cutting it for me. On a 4000-5000lb vehicle I need generally a 37" tire or larger to get the flotation I need in the deep snow. I dig on the FSJ stuff a lot, but the body is just too bulky with a little too much butt hanging off the back. I do like that...

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

I'm pretty set on the 5.3 since it makes the 6l80 transmission pretty dang easy. If I found the right deal on a 6.0/6.2 I would think about it, but I think most of those came with the 6l90 also. I think the 5.3 will be enough with the deeper axle gearing I have in mind. I'm not looking for a...

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

I talked through this a bit earlier in the thread, but I have decided to buy the aqualu tub and build my own frame from scratch. The stock TJ frame isn't really anything to write home about and the tub would have to be pretty heavily modified for some of the things I have in mind.

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

Looking through some of the other pics it looks like that tub was bobbed a bit from full scrambler length? The stock CJ8 tub is 24" longer than a normal TJ/YJ/CJ7 tub. If the rear axle was moved back to a position similar to a stock SWB jeep rear axle is that would be a wheelbase of like...

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

The scrambler body has a little bit too much 'butt' on it for me, even with the rear axle moved back to the 110" range. I also need to move the front axle forward to fit the larger tires at the lower overall height I want. The LJ length tub comes out just about perfect for the 110" wheelbase in...

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

Thank you. I thought about using a LJ as a base for a long time. Once I got into the area where I thought I would need a different engine, transmission, transfer cases, and axles I just couldn't justify starting with a mostly complete vehicle to only not use most of it. I will admit that it...

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

Thanks for posting some pictures. It really helps to get a sense of scale. I was thinking about netting the other day....and curtains. I am half wondering if something couldn't be integrated in to the soft side windows on a soft top. On the road, being able to pull some dark curtains over the...

    Pull Pal or Hi-Lift?

I'm gonna say neither. That would save probably 100+ lbs in total or more. While I think the hi-lift can be a decent tool. VERY few vehicles are set up to use them properly. Most vehicles these days, even ones with aftermarket bumpers, will not have a good place to lift from. If you have a...

    Project: Doitall Dodge

We must have been typing at the same time. You pretty much nailed the 14-bolt thing. I may step up to 40s on the next set of tires so 4.10s might not be a bad idea. I would like to swap in a close ratio 3rd gen 6-spd some day also so either 3.73 or 4.10 would work well. 4.10 D60 low pinion...

Hackster's crew cab first gen cummins

I can't remember if you ended up with the OEM style pressed steel steering box bracket or the earlier cast box? If you have the pressed on give it a good check before you go, and keep an eye on it. I ripped mine in half about 3 time before I swapped to crossover steering. On the headnet for...

    Project: Doitall Dodge

The last of the GM 14-bolts had factory disc brakes and are just about the perfect 67" width to match the OEM front axle which is 67.5" wide. The 14-bolt also has the 3rd pinion bearing like a 9" which I think adds a good deal of strength without having to step up to a 11.5" ring gear like in...

Land Cruiser 100 to Jeep Rubicon Unlimited: Capability? Comfort?

I was able to get a total weight on everything too. The vehicle fully loaded with me in it, wet, was approx 3550-3600lbs. The vehicle without much of anything in it is approx 2930 ( some misc stuff and a half tank of fuel ). I am just about 200lbs with boots and clothes. So 'cargo' weight was...

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

Don't you have to buy the cowl in addition to the tub on the landcruiser stuff though? That makes a complete 'tub' about 7100.00 for a stretched fj40. The cj8 bobbed tub which basically comes with the front cowl/firewall in one-piece is only $4200ish? That would make the landcruiser about 40%...

Land Cruiser 100 to Jeep Rubicon Unlimited: Capability? Comfort?

Yup. This was how my flat fender was set up for 2000 miles of solo highway and another 300 miles in the back country spring snow over 13 days total.... It was full, but not brimming or stuffed. I could get at everything fairly quickly and efficiently. I was carrying 15 gallons of spare fuel...

    Project: Doitall Dodge

Thank you very much. For being so simple it just seems to do its job well. more boost will make more power I hope. I think the smaller exhaust housing on the HE351cw will also help with low end spool. If I change to a later model GM 14-bolt rear axle I have to regear. They don't make 3.55...

    Long Jeep.....chasing unicorns

Just a few random things and thoughts... I gave Aqualu a call. They are swamped. They are still working on quoting what I need. I'm not too worried about it since this is a slow project. I was working through some stuff on the rear suspension and how it impacts the tub design. Basically. I...

Try and just relax. There isn't much your going to do now that is going to make a huge difference in prep most likely. I just did about 2300+ miles in my flat fender.... http://2000milesofnervousnirvana.blogspot.com/ What I learned. Slow down. Stop and see things you normally wouldn't. Take...
