Nice truck.
Regarding your planned seat replacement, I'd recommend getting buckets out of an 80s or 90s SR5 truck, or another vehicle (Merc/BMW?), but not from a Tacoma. The Tacoma buckets are nice seats, but they leave something to be desired. I think my 88 SR5 seats are much more comfortable.
They've added a lot of fun videos since I last looked at their site. Lots of good info about border crossings, city guide and guides to living out of a vehicle/pirate camping. It's a great website.
The 4Runner tops are very cheap. You could get one for $0-$50 and modify it to your liking. If it doesn't work out, you can simply put your original top back one. I've picked up two for free from craigslist in the last few years. It would be cool to build a convertible top into the fiberglass...
SNWBRDR,
That's a great looking rack. I read your write up on Yotatech. I mounted one that I made by drilling holes in the roof also, and I've never had a leak... I put captured nuts from the inside and some kind of thin and dense foam between the rack and the roof, then between a washer and...
Great trip
Those are some great photos and video of some interesting places. It's good to see someone going out and discovering some places in TX.
Your comment expresses perfectly my sentiment regarding rural land in TX!
A few years ago, I lived in CA for 8 months. While there I spent as...
Ditto on the rust warning. I don't think that old Toyotas are any more prone to rusting than any other vehicle, they just last longer to show the damage. :-)
Here in Central TX, we don't have a problem with vehicles rusting, so I never think about it much. If you live somewhere where they...
If that's the stock engine, it's the 22R or 22R-E, just like the Hiluxes/4Runners have (and the Corona).
Very cool car. I had an 82 Celica GT that was nearly the exactly like what you started with. It's cool to see that they are still getting built into cool rides.

Viggen,
The only downside to 1st gen 4Runners is their size (which may or may not matter to you) and their age. Age = wear and potentially neglect.
When well maintained, they are solid rigs. Check this one out. It was driven from the US to Argentina...
These are nice designs, I like how they make it more like a factory installation and hide it from curious eyes.
The only thing that I don't like about them is that with them mounted up very high. Like that, you have to take your eyes off the road more than with a windshield mount which keeps...
Those are quite long slipper springs, and they are rather flat. I don't think that you'd be able to put a spring and shackle without raising the trailer height by at least 2-3 inches. As long as you keep the slipper greased I think it would function equally well.
You are probably planning...

I just discovered your thread, and I must say that you've done some incredible work. I'd like to say that you are an inspiration to the rest of us that are considering building an off-road camper, but I feel almost more intimidated than inspired. ha ha! :-P
I'm looking forward...
FYI, petitions only make a difference in matters of local government. Toyota will only listen to their own market research and what it identifies as the substantial market demand. A petition indicates some amount of desire, not demand, with the difference being the ability and willingness to...
I have that same bumper and I'm going to encounter the problems when I do my SAS so I have been considering doing some modification similar to what you did. Your mods look great, especially fitting that big winch in there.
I have one question: how many bolts are holding it to the frame now...
Toyota "losing its way" is exactly what caused their current situation (specifically, they lost "The Toyota Way") but I think that their management will bring it back in line. This is a bump in the road, and it's a pretty big one... but from big events like this one, corporate managers can...
I think that Toyota sold a few cars in the US with package designations that weren't badged. For example, I had a 1982 Celica GTS (GT + fender flares), but it was badged as a GT. In 1983 they started putting GT-S badges on them.
That is one sweet 'Cruiser. The seller is exaggerating a bit by...
Less than 25 yrs old is also expensive.
NTHSA has all the info on their website:
