3rd Gen Montero Transmission Service Advice

Complete a full fluid exchange with SP3. The procedure is relatively simple. Drain and refill the pan. Remove the ATF line that feeds the cooler. Cycle the ignition (briefly) so some fluid is pumped out of the line. Replace through the dipstick. Continue brief cycling of ignition until fresh...

Bolting jerry can mounts directly to tailgate? Talk me out of it...

I had an '81 pickup (pictured in avatar) with a Blitz can mounted on the side of it that survived an extended trip to Panama and back to the states on many hundreds of miles of tracks. I used flat stock on the inside of the panel to spread the load. Not sure I'd mount it on the tailgate due to...

    Interior wall/ceiling covering

Thanks again for all the suggestions and replies! Wiring and insulation is completed. Settled on using Coroplast for wall/ceiling covering and affixing to the structure with 3/4" lathe screws. I only got a bit done on the ceiling so far (working on it between jobs and chores). I'll cover the...

2013 Toyota Tacoma TRD xPro - Full Overland Build, No Expense Spared

OP, Nice rig! I drove to Costa Rica and back in the early 1990's with the Toyota pickup in my avatar. ...don't forget El Salvador. We had some interesting interactions with the police/military in the mountains of Guatemala. It was quite the adventure. We made it safely there and back to the...

    Interior wall/ceiling covering

I do have "heavy duty", sticky backed velcro that claims to hold "up to ten pounds". I was considering using something like that, in the event I need to add more wiring or have access to wiring. However, the ridged velcro is something that I haven't looked into yet. Thanks for the suggestion. I...

    Interior wall/ceiling covering

I considered using the finish washers, but thought the lath screws would be a more inexpensive solution and work just as well. ABS is still on the list of possible material...thanks for the thickness spec., tirod3. Cheers

    Interior wall/ceiling covering

destefan, Thank you for the great feedback on Coroplast. I'm starting to lean in that direction a bit now that I've heard that it is standing the test of off-highway travel. How are folks adhering it to the walls and ceiling? If I go this route, I'm thinking about screwing it with lath...

    Interior wall/ceiling covering

I'm current exploring options for wall and ceiling covering for an OVRLND camper. ...What are folks using in their campers? I'm open to all suggestions, but hoping to keep it light, easy to keep clean, and durable. Looked at Coroplast. It's light and easy to keep clean, but appears as though it...

OVRLND CAMPERS ONLY : Post your OVRLND Camper build here or a link to your build thread to inspire others!

We are currently using an inflatable mattress that is about 2.5 - 3 inches thick when inflated. The mattress is folded in half when the bed extension is slid back into place for departure. The plan is to get a foam mattress that can fold in half eventually...currently I'm working on insulation...

We are very pleased with the half barn door set-up compared to the regular flip-up hatch. If we had a flat bed I would have considered full barn doors. We have the standard height for bedding and it is fine. We do pull the bedding down before collapsing the top, but leave the mattress up there...

2002 montero limited rear end rumble/vibration over 50mph

As posted earlier in this thread, your best bet when changing the transmission fluid is to do a complete flush. It is truly not that difficult. Pull the trans. fluid hose off the cooler and place it in a bucket. Crank/start the rig for a brief time then shut off, watching old fluid come out...

Upgrading suspension, is OME worth the extra money over Bilstein?

Either suspension is a good start on your build. I've had Old Man Emu suspension on rigs (currently set up on my '86 Toyota pickup), and Bilsteins as well. I've had more than one set of OME shocks fail (leaks) on camping rigs that carry gear for extended off highway travel. If you're planning...

OVRLND CAMPERS ONLY : Post your OVRLND Camper build here or a link to your build thread to inspire others!

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking about something that was similar... Perhaps a peg or bolt that drops into place to keep the bed from sliding out, but can be easily removed to pull the bed out. I'll keep playing with some designs... Cheers

Is anyone else having issues with the bed sliding out while driving up steep, rough grades off-pavement? I'm considering installing some sort of removable stop/peg to keep the bed in place. Cheers

Another Rhino Rack Disaster Class, And How I Think You Can Avoid Being Like Me

I ran Rhino rack's HD bars (three) on my Montero for over 250k miles of travel/off-highway use and never once had any issues. With a family of four, dog, and camping gear we had the rails under some weight for sure. When installing the hardware, I used lock-tight. Cheers
