I cleaned the egr valve which was pretty dirty. And the idle dropped in park to 700ish with about +/- 30 rpms fluctuation. I'll check the fuel trims and post them tomorrow. I'm a bit of a noob in that area.

Yeah, I've got a scanner. I use torque pro and than I also used my buddies professional one. I think an issue mat have also been that the negative terminal was a bit loose, so it may have disconnected some time.

My 96 was running the same way. The issue was my exhaust valves were not sealed well at all. Could be similar, due to the damage done by the broken piece.

Ill make sure to get that tool when the timing belt comes in.

Thanks for clarifying that, but the issue I'm having trouble wrapping my head around is whether the dowel placement as is, with the timing marks being correct, safe or not.
