300tdi gets my vote. Keep it standard for parts availability/ease of maintenance when away. Many many laden Defenders have travelled the known world with no issues, go for a tdi and spend your engine conversion budget on other equipment. Paul

Heres mine after an 18 month total rebuild of a 1993 2.5 Petrol 90 into a 300tdi, the only original parts left are The Axle casings and diffs, Pedals, Dashboard, Rear tub, Roof, Wings (Fenders) and front radiator panel. (breakfast?)......everything rebuilt onto a Galvanised chassis, new td5...

Smear with Lanolin, natures best, eco friendly, blah blah.......good stuff!.............It stops sheep rusting! Paul

At the risk of being a party pooper, did you consider the damage the seat belt would have done to your little boy if you had to perform an emergency stop?, your weight pushing him into the seatbelt. While fun it could have ended in tears.......thank goodness it didn't...... Paul

Looking at the orange lights on the wing tops, they are the same as those used by the Dutch military and the 2 1/4 diesel was specified by the Dutch also........the Brits military Rovers were always 2 1/4 petrol, so the engine is probably standard fitment and not a conversion...... looks a tidy...
