02 Double Cab Build

Writing this in the hopes that I can keep some momentum going this winter to keep adding to this truck. This will be a good log of the build and hopefully keep the motivation up to get out in the freezing cold and do some work! And hey, maybe you guys get a kick out of it!

I've always been a fan of Toyota (can't say I don't catch the Jeep every once in a while). It stems from living in SA as a kid and bouncing down jungle roads in Hilux's with stock snorkels. Those trucks just get beat on day in and day out and don't complain.

I had a 89 extended cab that's a story for another thread. Needless to say I loved it and drove the wheels off it through high school and 8 years of college (lots of people go to college for 8 years). Anyway all those years of being poor and not being able to afford things like regular maintenance + 280k hard miles led to the violent demise of that V6. RIP old red.

That led to me a 89 4Runner with even more miles but a fresh 22re. That thing was sweet but I quickly discovered that whoever did the swap did a horrible job as far as the wiring goes. Basically chopped the harness of the old (in many odd and hard to reach places) and wire-nutted the new in. Drove it for a year then sold it for more than I paid (Colorado price)!

Oh yeah I picked up a 85 Westy, but you guys don't wanna hear about that hippy BS.....lol!

Which brings me to my current rig: 02 double cab TRD, purchased with 130,000 miles two years ago. Now she has 200k and I've done some things, but the real stuff I want to do this winter. So here we go!

Pic when I picked it. Its a Colorado truck, sold new in Grand Junction, I'm second owner. 130,000 miles.

I've done a couple things: 5100's, OME dakars and 33x12.5 A/T's the most notable.

Anyways, that's about it. Hope to have some news (new goodies) or a trip report up here soon, cheers!

Welcome to Expo. You have had some great vehicles, but I think you will find the Tacoma to be a keeper. Make sure you change the timing belt or get it changed if you have not done that yet. Lots of good info on here for your build.

Not much news, just ordered of bunch of non-fun parts (timing belt and pulleys, idlers, coolant hoses, wp, thermostat, etc - thanks austintaco). Was waiting for some crappy winter weather to do this! Before all the snow flew, went out and scared the wife on a tippy little spot of trail by my house. Just before this we almost pinballed off some trees sliding backwards down a snow trail out of control.

Might as well post some more pics while I'm at it!

One thing I've realized in doing this little post is that I haven't documented my trucks adventures very well (like towing a 23' foot trailer that you need to be in 4 low to get moving). Expect more and better media of adventures this summer - the calendar is filling up!

Cool truck. I like the simplicity with good components so far. Anxious to see what you do with it moving forward. I really miss my gold '03 DC I recently sold. Was easily one of the best trucks I've ever owned.

Thanks Box Rocket! Gotta say I got reinvigorated to take this thing onto more gnarly trails after seeing some of what you took yours on. Having mountain biked in Moab for years and watching in disbelief what other rigs could drive up, I thought I needed a Jeep or something with 40's to get out there and play!

Happy new year! Hope you all had a great Christmas break, I did! Filled with skiing, drinking, wrenching, and hanging out with family!

DSCN0514.jpg

While I had time off, I replaced the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, hoses, and belts. I bought the truck at 130,000 miles and was told the timing belt had been replaced but had no proof. Does this look like a typical belt after 110,000 miles?

Anyways, regardless it didn't blow and now it's all buttoned up for another 90k!

Up next is new front springs (OME 882's), new ball joints and tie rod ends, new rotors. Then hopefully some more interesting things in preparation for the summer!

Cheers!

Clean ride you've got there!

I myself just picked up a '02 Tacoma DC TRD... so stoked on it!!

Awe yeah MCObray! The more trucks I get to know, the more I appreciate the 1st gen DC!

Nothing much more on the truck front, guess it hasn't blown up after my timing belt install so thats a win! Just lots of ski miles.... probably driven 500 miles in 4hi this winter so far...

Cheers!

I remember test driving a new '03 double cab at Longmont Toyota when trying to help Mom look for a rig. It was a lot of fun but I couldn't sell her on a pickup. :(

That red 4runner must have technically been a 1990 model year--the '89 was still the 2-door, 1st gen w/removable top. Those 2nd-gennies were my dream trucks when I was 13.

Is that a really long bike rack on the 3rd-gen truck or is it a trailer?

...And we very much appreciate hippy BS...at least I do.

I think you're right tanglefoot...I bought it in a pinch and didn't know too much about 4runners, just knew I wanted Toyota and couldn't afford to pay Colorado price for a pickup at the time!

Its a four bike hitch rack - Thule T2. The best way to carry around your bikes. I have the truck outfitted to be able to take 4 people and their bikes, dogs, and gear to the trailhead. Speaking of which, I am super pumped - after 2 nights of getting up at midnight to get on the National Park Service website and get a White Rim permit, I finally got one!

White Rim Permit.jpg

Spring in the desert is one of my favorite things! My truck will be the sag wagon for up to 8 people, so its gotta be organizationally dialed. I also think I am going to have to add an AAL with that weight, those Dakars are sooffttties.

Thanks! I'm thinking about starting another build thread for Chewy the Westy, that thing is getting pretty dialed and is the go-to fun-mobile (just not for the "off-piste" stuff :))

So it's been quiet on truck but this desert trip is getting lighting a fire under my butt! First thing was taking care of some horrible vibes that developed as a result warped rotors and drums.

It took two tries of the new rotors warping, warranty returns etc to get it right. While I was at it I got some Spidertrax 1.25" to stop frame rubbing.

Photo update!

IMG_0792.jpg

Mega dittos to whoever can spot the awesome trail fix in this photo that has held for over two years!

IMG_0791.jpg

Threw some new stoppers on in an effort to get rid of front end shimmy - did the trick.

IMG_0870.jpg

New tires are sweet - but rubbing bad in front of the rear fender well and at full lock under compression....

IMG_0827.jpg

Mall crawler....

DSC_3545.jpg

Off to the dessert! My Bro took his full out to white rim with us, nothing like 62mm turbo whine in the desert!

DSC_3560.jpg

The tacoma made it out as well.

DSC_3565.jpg

IMG_0883.jpg

The rear tire was rubbing so badly on the front of the fender well I ended up just taking the plastic fender off. It helped a little. The OME Dakar leafs really need the D6XL AAL if you are going to be carrying any weight at all. Its on order to installed this weekend, along with some other bits. I need some new coils - any one think 882's up front - without a bumper and winch - are going to be to much? I would run the 5100's at the lowest setting.

IMG_0892.jpg

And just as we got off the trail (on it three days) the skies just started pouring! We hightailed it to Milt's (as per yoosch) but it was closed! So the brewery it was - also a good choice. It was pretty fun as the power would occasionally blink out, leaving a dark bar full of cheers for a moment!

More to come...
