03 Tundra (Re)Build

I figured after lurking around here for quite a while I would post a (re)build thread for my truck. I say it's a rebuild half jokingly but my build going forward on my truck is to try and redeem, and remedy, some choices that I've already made. I can't say that any of the mods I've already installed on the truck are bad or wrong, they were just made with looks in mind instead of function. This is something that I'd like to start changing now.

Well here are the specs on my truck:

2003 Tundra SR5 AC
- 5" Tuff Country DB lift kit
- Camburg UCA
- Bilstein 5100s in front
- Custom Deaver leaf pack to provide 4" lift
- 1" block
- Tuff country SX8000 shocks in the rear
- 285/70R17 BFG KO2
- Pro Comp 7069 wheels (4.75" BS)
- Bedrug
- ARE CX shell on its way
-Flip out double din stereo, hideaway sub, various other inconsequential small stuff

One of the main reasons I'd like to start getting the truck to a point where it's more functional than looks is my son. I grew up in a family that loves the outdoors as long as they don't have to be out in it, this isn't how I want my son to be raised. He's 9 months old now so starting next year I'd like to start camping, doing some pretty low key wheeling, just outdoor exploring overall.

So with that being said I am probably as close to a newb in the expo and overlanding world as it gets, please be gentle ;-)

Right now the main change i would like to make is to get rid of the block and spacers in the front. I have come up with a couple of ideas but I wanted to get some input on if it would be worth it or not.

I was thinking about running the SFK with extended shackle from Archive Garage to replace the block. The reviews say the extended shackle net about 1" of lift if im correct so this should allow me to maintain the same amount of lift that I currently have.

For the front I've been looking at the Icon extended travel coilovers for a 6-7" lift. I've called and talked with them and everything measures up so they should work with the Tuff country DB kit that's on the truck.

Thoughts or suggestions? I'm a little in over my head so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Which Version of the lift do you have? did you get a replacement spindle or are you using the spindle spacer?

I have replacement spindles.

It's the 55905KH kit. The shocks were swapped for the 8000 series.

So I think I'm actually leaning toward removing the block and not worrying about the loss of 1" for now. I can focus on the SFK later.

My question in regards to the Icon coilovers is, would these help improve the travel in the front and what would my main limiting factor be? The way I was thinking about this is that my down travel won't change much but my up travel could potentially improve quite a bit. I feel that I'm thinking about this in a very simplistic way so I'm sure I'm missing something.

Icon extended travel comes from the droop. In order to get the extra travel I think you need aftermarket UCA with a uniball setup. Up travel is probably limited from the extended bump stops that came in your current lift it.

I have Camburg UCA already so that part is covered. I haven't seen any aftermarket bump stops on the truck so I'm not sure that they're actually installed. Of course I wasn't looking for them so I quite possibly overlooked them.

So you will be able to run the extended travel ones from icon. Again it's only for about an inch of more droop. All bracket lifts Come with either a bracket to lower the factory bump the same amount it was lifted. Or an extended bump stop that goes in place of the factory one. Even if you removed it or modified the extended bump stop. The coilover also has to be able to cycle up that far. Basically you need to remove your current coilover and bump stop. Cycle the suspension up and down to see how much it could safely travel. Measured the space where the coilover suppose to go at the maximum compressed and droop length. This will tell you what coilover to look for. This will tell you the compressed length and extended length.

Post some photos of the front suspension if you want. I can probably spot them.

Looks like factory to me. I just looked at the first picture on my phone and there they are plain as day.

I also got my new shell on.

oooh thats not good. Your shocks are the bump stops right now. You need to add a spacer.

Sean is right. You are missing the extended bump stops. Well. If you can. Flex your truck out and compress the front till the shock bottoms out. This is where you need to space out the bumps to keep it from going any further than this.

They will still be too short. You basically need to extend them 5 inches.

Sean
Picked these up from a local off road store today. The guy had them laying around out in the shop and didn't even charge me for them.

The spacers on the right are 3.5" and the ones on the left are 3". From what I can tell so far the extended bump stops are pretty much all the same or are there any manufacturers that I should look for in particular?
