You've got to remember that the market for these vehicles is not the hardcore 4 wheeler. Toyota will be happy to sell those guys an FJ cruiser or even an LC. IRS makes sense because it delivers a smoother on-road ride and is more comfortable on the streets and dirt roads where this thing will be living. A lot of the competition has IRS (I know, for example, the new Expedition has it) so it makes sense for Toyota to adopt it since they're going after the Expedition/Suburban/Tahoe market with the Sequoia.

Toyota is very smart in making a plethora of SUVs to suit every need, from the RAV-4 to the LC. They even make a hybrid SUV (Highlander.) It's obvious that Toyota is trying to be the GM of the 21st century, and from appearances, they're well on their way to doing just that.
