Air bags give you the ability to level the truck out better. If truck loads up more just add more air in the bag. I've 5100 set at 0.75" air bag can level out the truck with no problem. Even at 1.75" it should work. I've both add a leaf and air bag in the back cause the weight of camper.

How well is the air bags holding up? Im just concerned the bags wont do well with the cold and salted roads. How do you like the ride unloaded?

Bags have held up pretty good. I'm in California so it's does not see salt or snow. Air bags are used on 10 wheeler so they should hold up in those condition. When unload it's a bit bumpy since I've add-a-leaf if I only have bags it's should be better.

That kind of answerd my next question on what would you choose. AAL or Bags. Seems like you might choose the bags? I wont have nearly the weight in my bed as you do with your camper. My bed will just have your normal camping supplies with some wood, plus the added tounge weight of my pop up camper. Im still debating on if I want to lift the vehicle, level, or keep it close to stock.

I have both the AAL and bags. At first I had installed ride-rite bags when I put my FWC on in 2007. A year or so later and the bags were trashed, they just didn't hold up well. I then installed an AAL for general load carrying increases and a bump in the rear height. Eventually I ended up installing another set of bags, this time Firestones, for our new camper. They're also a godsend for trailering as the tongue load isn't as much of an issue now.

If I've lighter load then I'll choice bags. Bags give you the option to level out the truck it really helps with headlight aim. You'll not point your headlight high and get flash all the time because the weight on the back. If you do choice bags, go with Firestone like CLynn85 said. It's a much better setup than ride-rite, I tried both as well. If you don't lift you truck too much bags can raise the rear to level out but the ride is going to suffer a bit.

Heres the specs.(Of the pop up)

GVWR: 2252
Dry Weight: 1480
Carrying Capacity: 772
Dry Hitch weight: 162
Tacoma weight: ??

Vehicle Occupants 90% of the time while towing the trailer.

Me: 205
G/F: skinny
Dog: 60

So even maxing out the gvwr with camping essentials and the weight of the occupants would be 26xx lbs, Then add some wood and were looking between 2700 and 2800 total.
I dont think ill add 700 lbs of extra to max the gvwr. Just using the max as an example. This is the first year with the pop up and towing with the tacoma. Last year I tent camped about 10 times. I hope to go out just as much with the pop up, Key word Hope.

Will firestones be overkill for the times im not towing? Even with 5 to 10 psi.

Thank you.

This is probably the most realistic thread I've viewed. I will never have the time or money. I mean all I want is some armor (sliders bumpers and skids), lockers of course, and a modest lift and tire setup. Right?

This puts it in my perspective, 1grand or just under; baby steps.what to do,

Stock leafs are very soft, there is not much up travel before it hits the bump stop. With weight it'll hit bump stop for sure. The pop ups hitch weight is 162lbs you can has someone around that weigh stand on the hitch and see how much the rear drop. When not towing it's going to be a firm ride but not bad. To me bags is a better compromise than AAL.
