10 year old tacoma vs brand new tacoma

I hear ya... It does feel nice getting into a new(er) vehicle.

Another thing is the interior of the newer Tacomas is much improved over the 1st gen IMO. Some of the plastic seems a bit cheaper, but generally I like the 2nd gen interior more.

The seats are leaps and bounds better, much better cup holders than my '99 too. ;)

The extra width is awfully nice, the cab is 4" wider in the 2gen, IIRC...you wouldn't think 4" would make a difference but it does.

Heck even the bench seat in my reg cab is better than the buckets in my 2001. Those seats were terrible.

The seats in both of my 1st Gen Taco's were horrific. Even my 3rd Gen 4Runners weren't much better. 2nd Gen Taco/4th Gen 4Runners are vastly improved for my boney rear end.

I thought the plastics in the interior were pretty much a wash either way. 1st Gen's aren't anything to write home about.

Agreed and X2 for the 1st Gen seats... garbage. Replacements are on my short list. Although the cab is much roomier on the 2nd Gen, I wouldn't trade in my narrower truck for it.

The only thing easier to repair and bulletproof than an 85' Hilux with a 22RE or a diesel is a 1st gen Taco with a 3RZ. If you can get past the pesky EGR system (which is easy to maintain once you know how it works) it is the most simple and reliable gas motor you will ever encounter. That rig is the best compromise in performance and reliability. It has a lot of classic Toyota engineering that you will see when you work on it. Designed to be fixed with basic hand tools in a 3rd world country. The current Taco...not so much.

The 3rd world is where I really discovered the G1s. My unit had several of them which we brought over from the states while in Northern Iraq prior to the second desert action. And we beat the hell out of those vehicles. Although I'd add to the list of hand tools a cheap welder and some current (at least for desert use).

Thank goodness, seats are an easy fix. I fixed my lame cup holders too. Took a plastic cutting board, cut it to fit over the existing ones, knocked two holes it with a hole saw...no more spilled coffee.

The 2nd Taco girth doesn't bother me, as I am looking 2nd gen Tundras too. Need more of a gear hauler than anything, I save the super nasty stuff for the dirt bikes.

Keep on pondering a Tundra regular cab long bed with a Flip Pac, heck two moto gear bags damn near take up half the bed in my current Taco...the Tundra would have room to spare.

That's like a 100-series with a truck bed. If you don't need 2 extra doors, go for it. I wonder if there is any MPG difference with the reg cab compared to DC's. But whatever you do, don't get those hideous wheels.

Those are horrible. Ha Ha picking out wheels, that is about as hard picking out a new truck...(yikes!)

Methods, Walkers, Gordons...are on the short list...stock 5 spoke steelies are fine too.

Are you referring to the 01-04' Double Cab TRD rigs that were basically off the shelf trucks with some armor shipped over? I've seen pictures of them in the Middle East. I own a CUCV M1031 so I dig the Chevy rigs and HMMWV's but love how a Gen 1 Taco gets a gun mounted tom the bed and put into service.

Google it...been done before.

If you want the best...your best bet would be to scavenge the front diff parts from an early Taco with manual hubs.
