100 Series headlights not so good!

We have a 2000 100 series. The headlights (low beams specifically) just aren't very bright. Enough so that a couple times driving I've wondered if there is a headlight out. I replaced the bulbs a couple years ago (1 had burned out) with regular 9006 (I think, can't remember for sure) bulbs from the local department store. Still the same dim output. With the rest of the truck being so well designed and built, the poor headlights seem odd. Is this normal for an early 100 series? I understand the 05-07 trucks have better headlights, but why are ours so poor? Is it a bulb/lens issue or is there something else this could be pointing to in the electrical system? I haven't checked the voltage lately, but the battery is a couple years old and I have no idea how old the alternator is. The truck doesn't seem to have any other electrical problems though.

The Cruiser is my wife's daily driver and last night she finally asked if there's something I could do about the headlights. The winter roads are chunky with frozen snow and ice and she drives home after dark. She's been using her fog lights to help see whats directly in front of the truck, but I'd like to improve the low beams. I've searched a bunch and the only thread I've really found is the HID conversion on ih8mud from a few years ago... but I'd rather not have to put the headlights in the oven and bust out a Dremel tool. I encountered LED bulb conversions in my search of the interwebs, but I can't find much definitive information other than websites that are trying to sell them.

Have any of you dealt with this? The LED bulbs sound intriguing due to their simple installation, but if it's a lense/reflector issue they may not make much difference. The HID conversion looks OK if it really is the best, but it seems there are possible issues aiming the projectors if your Dremeling/cutting/seating of the projector isn't perfect.

Any input or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Those led lights suck. Stay away from coloured bulbs too. You could try the hir(not hid). Its either 9011 or 9012 i forget. I'd check to see what kind of voltage you have at the plug. Also might be a clouded plastic light housing.

I've also got a 2000; my head lights are actually not bad. Have you checked the aim of your lights? They may be too far up or down. You may also check the housing as Buddha said, the aftermarket plastic ones can get foggy. Not sure of the reflector quality of those plastic ones either. OEM will be a glass lense.

Thanks guys... yea its a glass lens, its crystal clear. I know what you mean about the discolored lens, my Tundra has yellowed lenses, but its lights are still much brighter than our Cruiser. The aim seems OK, but I'll find a wall to check. And the voltage at the plug is a good idea! I'll look into the HIR, haven't seen that.

HID with projector retrofit is really the only way to go to improve without blinding everyone else on the road.

I feel your pain. Mine were WRECKED! I ended up getting brand new OEM. WORLD of difference.

Wrecked how? My wife drives our '99 in similar circumstances to the OP and something's gotta happen with mine too. I've run 2 different PIAA bulbs in them and they still suck.

You want the Phillips 9011 HIR (Halogen infrared) for the low beams. You'll triple you light output over stock and not tax the factory wiring. Try re-aiming your headlamps as well. These two things made a HUGE difference on our 1999 for less than $25.

I'd post a photo but they won't load for some reason. There was water inside the light and they wereally fogged up. The reflective material was burnt up somehow... complete mess!

just bought new headlights for my 1998 100series and added 100w bulbs with a electronic relay. Made a 100% difference.
