(100 series) Least expensive 200lb RTT capable roof rack solution?

Hey guys and gals,

I am sure you are all familiar with the logistic juggle to get your rigs to where you'd like them to be... costs add up quickly and the balance between adventure and gearing up can get out of hand.

I need to focus on getting a few more payment free adventure-worthy years out of my beloved cruiser.

I'd like to run a big RTT. Specifically a CVT Mt McKinley... its a big'un to say the least.

I am not keen on spending 1200+ bones on a roof rack... so a question for the forum:

Could I use some combo of mounts and thule bars, or labrack pieces... or something similar to hold such a goliath of a RTT?

Thanks in advance,

I ran three Yakima rails for my ARB Simpson. I don think the issue is so much the load bars, as much as the factory mounts of the factory rails at the roof.

Lots of creaking an popping when I was Offroad made it a pretty quick decision to move to the front runner slimline.

I think the Gamiviti rack is one of the best for the money, and know of a few folks running them. I don't know the load limits for t though. I'm sure a quick search will provide this or Maybe @fireball or @paflytyer can comment.

Cool thanks Chris. Just went through the Gamviti site... whew! As a web pro I had to hold back a few verps! But knowing they're local to me here in Colorado, and a well liked small biz... I think I'll go that route...

Seems relatively inexpensive if you don't get the expo style rack with the extra hoop/light tabs.

Thanks again,

You can't beat Gamiviti for the price, quality and customer service. The owner Tim is a truly stand up guy, and like you said he's local which is a huge plus. I would definitely recommend Gamiviti.

Just a thought but are you married to the big RTT? I have found you can get a really really nice ground tent for a fraction of the cost of a RTT and associated gear to mount it, and have more room to boot. Just a thought (and I own a RTT on a trailer, the biggest one Ive ever seen a Gen 1 Mombassa).

For the record, one guy that went on our Big Bend trip mounted his RTT to the factory rack bars (the vertical ones) and opened it to the rear. Only had to take off the air dam.

Solid as a rock. I liked it a lot better than the other guy with his mounted to Yakima crossbars on the stock rack. It sat too tall.

I ran ARB RTT on my 100 with (3) Frontrunner load bars. 1/2 the cost of a full rack. Get track, feet and cross bars piece by piece, not offered as a kit. One very nice feature about FR is that their cross bar feet come in lengths for the curvature of the 100s roof line, this is an issue if using more than 2 cross bars.

Do you know how I might contact him to find out what tent and gow he mounted it?

Our family (6) has an upcoming trip through grand teton, yellowstone, and glacier nps and the rtt option is what we're looking at.

Thnx

I used Whispbar HD roof bars to mount my RTT and Batwing awning on my Prado. The bars are transferable to any vehicle. Just need to get the specific mounting kit for your vehicle. The feet that I used attach to the OEM mounting points directly (OEM roof rails need to be removed). I believe they make a similar kit for the LC100. The 3-bar mounting kit includes feet that allow for the roof curvature. All 3 bars end up being evenly aligned. I chose the HD aero bars but would probably go with the simple bars if I did it again (much cheaper and fits the RTT mounting brackets better, I had to make custom mounting brackts to fit the wider bars). A great thing with the open ended C-channel is that mounting the awning was a breeze once I had t-brackets made that slide into the open end.
