Bumper

Finally to end the bumper...

Got the second arm done and mounted tonight. I put two frames to hold the jerry can cages. The frames are two separate entities so they could sustain the weight of two full jerry cans. I didn't want to risk making one long frame to hold the cages with 4 full cans. I bought the cages from CBI--I got them on sale for a pretty good deal a long time ago, so it saved me quite a bit of time/money rather than making my own cage.

All I have is a cell phone for pics, so forgive the crappy resolution. Here's a pic to show the separate frames:

Then with both jerry cages bolted on:

I only have 2 jerry cans at the moment (1 water and 1 fuel) so here's an idea what it'll look like:

This is one of the coolest rigs ever to grace the pages of the Portal. Simple, reliable, capable, classic. Thanks for sharing with us.

IMO that I-6 should NEVER leave the engine bay unless it's for a rebuild someday. The Cummins 4BT/6BT is a great option, no doubt, but not for rigs that started life with a pre-smog I-6.

🔝🔝 what he said, truck is too cool. Especially because of the engine. 🔝🔝

I just found this thread and went through it all. Awesome truck. The modes you have done so far are great. Keep the spirt but make it more usable. Makes me really regret getting ride of my 78' K5. I have been slowly looking for a 70-80 old simple K series. This is making me want to put a rush on it.

Thanks guys for all the nice comments and encouragement! It's fun having a group of people that share the same interests and passions.

Here are a couple small updates to make the truck a little more functional for my needs. First, I changed the rear diff cover. My old one was bent due to a rock I scraped. No matter what I did, I couldn't bend it back to where it wouldn't leak anymore. So I bit the bullet and bought a new diff cover from Jeg's. Man was it hard to find a heavy duty cover for this Corporate 12 Bolt! It's an LPW Ultimate 12 cover. So far I'm really pleased, although I am having a small issue with a very minor leak from the drain plugs. I might need to find gaskets for those bolts? It didn't come with them, but I may try to find some.

I like the look of the the new diff cover amidst the old iron:

I capped off the bumper with some spring plungers to hold the bumper swing-out arms open. I had to do this ASAP because it was driving me crazy having to hold the arms out while I dropped the tailgate. I welded some pipe couplers to the swing-out arms which the plunger slides in to.

Here it is on a tree job...being able to lock the arms out is so vital, especially when on an incline like this one. I was grinning from ear to ear when I drove in and out of this wooded ravine in my truck. In granny gear, this thing just crawls over and through and up just about anything, even with a full load of green ash logs.

Love that last pic. Reminds me of our old trucks. One was a '70 2wd, 1/2ton, 350, 2bbl, 4spd, non-power anything. My dad loaded it so heavy once with green oak fire wood that it broke a front bed bolt coming up out of the woods (Ozarks of Arkansas). The frame kind of twisted, but he figured the damage was done, so to house we went. Got it all unloaded and went to town to buy another bolt. Installed it, and everything lined back up and it was ready for the next load.
.

Our other truck was a '72 2wd Cheyenne Super, 1/2t, 350, 4bbl, auto, PS and PB. Used to have a "headache" rack on it and we would load the wood to the top of the rack (cab high) and keep piling it on until no more would fit and away we would go.
.

Neither truck was beat up either, they weren't "wood trucks." My dad was a big believer in using a truck like a truck, but that didn't mean it had to look like it was used. The inside of the bed could be scratched, but not the outside.
.

Man I miss those trucks.

That last pic is just awesome. Love that one of the best truck on this forum gets used to boot. Keep it up, truck is killing it.

This truck is beautiful. Probably my favorite build thread. Don't ever repaint it. That patina is awesome.

I have an update brewing--the ol' K10 should be ready for some pictures by this weekend. It's still in the shop just wrapping up loose ends. Stay tuned...
