And a year later...
Not entirely sure why I fell off there. I did get the brakes finished up, new shocks and parabolics (lean to the right, thinking about using shims to correct), replaced some window tracks after the old ones rusted and morfed into something unrecognizable. I even bought some Defender seats which I like, but take up a good bit more space than the series and leave you sitting pretty close to the dash. Thinking if I removed the cross brace behind the seat I could slide them back further, but I do love the defender seats.
Last few weeks my landy crapped out on me twice while driving and a third time just plain wouldn't start. I'll admit that she doesn't get the attention she needs, I have been looking for an excuse to pull the 2.25 lump and replace it with my OM617
pulled the engine and trans on Saturday with the help of a friend. I'll post some pics here in a few

Here are a couple pics of the tranny. That thing was a bear! much heavier than I thought it would be. Any sugestions on what to do with the tranny while I have it out? I have seen people put a considerable amount of time and money into this section of the build, its not that I wouldn't like to, I just don't have a lot of either.
It shifts pretty well and leaks like most too. My thought here is, wait until it dies and replace with a junkyard NP435. Guess that is kind of the trend of my landy, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I was thinking of doing the same with my axles but a friend told me they might be worth some money. If that is the case maybe it would be a good idea to get a few bucks for them before I kill them, since I already know they will be a week point with the new motor.
Any thoughts on this?

I don't think a used series transmission will last behind a OM617. So why re-engineer everything now, just to do it in a year when this trans craps the bed?
Personally, I'd be going for a R380 stubby + part time converted LT230. Robert Davis already has the conversion kit to mount the OM617 to a defender trans, so you'd be good to go there. Then you'd have 5th gear and awesome low range (3.3 to 1 is very nice).

Or go the route I'm going... OM617 + SM465 + Stock Series t-case. You'll never have a reliability issue.

Glad you guys brought up some more options, I will be looking into replacing the tranny. I would like to keep the transfer case though

So now I am doing the inglorious job of dissembling the body and cataloging all of the nuts and bolts. Figure now is a good time to do all of the jobs that don't cost any money, only time. When I'm lucky I get my brother-in-law to come over for an hour or two, otherwise I'm out there by myself turning one nut at a time. A slow process.

The small roof, trim peices were giving me hell until I removed the liner "headboard" that was hiding 2 small screws. The theme on the Rover seems to be trial and error (usually more error than I care for)
this small green patch seems to be some original paint. The picture doesn't do it justice, it looked really nice and gave me a little motivation to get a real paint job once I'm done with the greasy bits.

After do some research I am now wondering who has put the OM617 in front of the Series III gear box and what was the outcome?
Terri Ann's site says the rover box is good for about 120hp and 160lbs which is pretty much what the Merc oil burner puts out.
I read up on the sm465 and that just seems like too much tranny for the rover; its was made for dump trucks, really heavy duty. I also didn't like reading that it was very slow to shift
