1973 Wagoneer - Full Size Camping Goodness

Nice trip. Your rig had me almost to the point of selling my LJ Rubicon and buying a '79 waggy with a 4 speed. :)

One suggestion on inside the camper cooking: One thing we NEVER cook in our popup is meat in a frying pan. The oils and fats turn to aerosols from the heat, then precipitate/condense on cooler surfaces in the camper. The oils will get into the curtains, bedding, seat cushions, etc. Cook the meat outside, make the coffee/pancakes/etc. inside, and you won't have a camper that smells like stale bacon the next time you open it up. :)

This is an excellent build with my favorite domestic SUV of all time. Beautiful scenery, rig, and work. Keep it up!

I really like the build. I'm in the market for a pre-75 and I'm having a hard time finding one here in Modesto,CA.

Keep up the good work. It's my dream camping vehicle.

It took the camper on a few short trips in quick succession. Everything was fine, but the inverter inside stopped working for some reason.

None of the plugs will work, but the interior light still works. I'll add that to the list to figure out. Also, i found my brake reservoir empty, and a wet/dripy brake drum, so, looks like my wheel cylinder is leaking from the inside. And i still havent gotten the furnace running.

So, yeah...no power, no brakes, and no heat.

Other than that, she's been towing fine. I havent been driving the jeep much. On the last camping trip (new years eve) i popped a transmission line at the campground and dumped a few quarts of ATF everywhere, and covered the entire underside of the jeep with it. Sigh. The line had literally just slipped off. Also has a wire fall onto the exhaust manifold and melt through, thus shorting out the engine, and causing some issues while I was hauling the camper out there. Sigh.

Fixed both of those.

Then I had noticed my fan sounded loud lately, and one night the fan clutch seized up and started causing a ruckus. Repaired that with a spare I had in the garage.

What gives? I drove this thing for months without any issues then a bunch of crap happens all on one trip.

Enough about that...pics from Valley of fire state park.

Second trip. This was new years eve. It got down in the 20's that night. I ended up running my buddy heater the 2nd night. Other than that i just stayed under the covers and was 100% fine the first night (30's?). Wake up in the morning, fire up the buddy heater, took the chill off. Still beats sleeping in a tent, but like i said...no brakes no heat no power is a little disappointing.

I have wanted to get out there and camp for a while. All I've been able to do though was just drive through there about a billion times on my bike and get a couple pics learning how to use the dslr... This is just down the road from there:

relocated radio to the actual radio slot, and moved CB that was there under the AC (this was because the in dash speaker was too deep for the radio to fit in the slot, so the radio was in the glove box for 3 years)

i left alot of spare wire so i can put the speakers on the tailgate, or the roof ot the bumper or whatever when camping or at the beach.

need to make the 2nd speaker, but it sounds decent, better than my stock single speaker that only let me hear the left side of the radio. I'll probably stuff the boxes with fibers.

(don't mind the head liner, thats on the list since i can start spending money on cosmetics now that most of the mechanical stuff is taken care of)

still need to stuff them with insulation tomorrow. they dont sound great by any means, but as said before, way better than the single speaker only listening to half of a song. I can get them pretty loud, but they tend to lose quality when i get to the upper 1/4th of the volume.

They'll do just fine for what i need though!
