1979 Series III Landrover - and a happy son! (pics)

It's been a busy coupla days.. had to fly to Manchester, then trains to Blackburn, to collect a nearly 31 yr old Land Rover my son has bought on ebay.. and then drive it all the way back to Bournemouth in the snow, at 50mph with NO heater at all! (since fixed, it was only a fuse grrrr!)

Planes were grounded as the main Southampton runway was iced up so spent nearly 8hrs sat in the airport waiting.. which meant that it was full dark by the time I got to Blackburn.. sorted the truck, filled with fuel, got on my way about 8 pm.. Stopped at my sisters in Gloucestershire about 12.30pm (had had to stop for coffee twice I was so cold!! my fingertips cracked!) Made the rest of the Journey yesterday afternoon..

Anyway - today was spent cleaning her, tidying up, couple of minor repairs (the heater, replace a cracked wing mirror etc) and get him out driving it.. The insurance is almost exactly half of the cost of his old VW golf, and he has been so looking forward to it - and I'm chuffed to bits cos his reaction today has been brilliant, made all the effort totally worth it!

Here's some pics taken this afty of a happy 19 year old with his 31yr old truck!

Good times indeed :)

She's the standard 2.25 petrol, 4spd box, 88inch - nothing 'expo' going on yet, but hey, she's a proper Landy and didn't cost the earth (less than £1k). We'll need to spend a little on her, there's a few minor issues but nothing major. Tyres is likely to be the largest expense!

Some times I just love being a dad :)

Thanks guys!

She's had a respray a while back, and while its not the best (they were a bit lazy in the masking etc) it's fine and doenst matter at all on a truck this age..

Costs so far, including the truck, the plane flight and fuel to get back are about £1200 ($1900) - I reckon he's done really well for that money :)

That rig would bring very decent money in the States. He did very well. The fact that his insurance went down is just icing on the cake.

What are his plans for it?

Very Nice

Wow, that's a great looking Series.

What's the fancy review mirror?

Keep an eye out for a Fairey Overdrive on Ebay. My 88" has been transformed by it.

BTW, remember it's your sons :)

I was wishing for overdrive on that loooong trek home.. :)

The fancy rear view mirror, is a cheap one (but large) that simply clips over the top of an existing mirror to give a larger rear view. I didnt fit it, but it works quite well!

It's certainly his, and he seems to be keeping the one set of keys very close to his person!

... though I confess I've been looking at adverts for diesel defenders... ;-)

Beautiful truck - your son is highly fortunate! I love the colour!!

I hope you also got him a club to keep close-by for the hordes of young women soon to be falling all over themselves for a ride :coffeedrink:

Nice looking Landy! I like the nice attenae on the front of the roof.

The paint looks very similar to one I'm looking at here in the USA-the painter on this one was also lazy with the masking and covered the cappings. A small soda blaster and some careful masking can get the paint off those cappings(this is in my plans too).
