Thanks for all the good words guy. Definitely a weird week or so but all good for us now, some others, not so much. Some more photos of the recently opened areas,

These trucks are becoming a lot more rare at the local u-pull. I need cab mounts and bed rails, been waiting a minute.

2 bucks in 2 days, freezers are almost full, such a good start to the season. Had to get it done quickly this year because this kid could pop at any moment.

Congrats on the impending kiddo and the two bucks! What a great way to wrap up 2023.

My buddy hooked up with a velvet buck on opening morning. We went the rest of archery season without seeing another legal buck. Rifle season starts in 10 days.

Congratulations you guys! I'm sure you are already making camper expansion plans.
I bit the bullet and ordered new actuators for my camper so I will have spare old one for you.

Nice buck, good luck out there for rifle season.

What actuators did you go with, synchronized? - might be shopping for some new ones if I have to build another one of these. Thanks for the offer, I'll keep that in mind if another one quits on me.

Thanks for all the good words above guys. Definitely an exciting and scary time, the boy is due in approximately 4 weeks and we couldn't feel any less prepared haha. Another truck & camper project is imminent with this somewhat recent change of course.

Back to regular updates,
Sometimes we do it nice because we do it twice - or at least I do...
This front bar has not been working well for several reasons: it's too stiff, and still hits the frame...
So round 2, smaller sway bar trials. I went from a 1.4" bar to a .9" bar off an early 90's explorer.
53235492539_031b38fe6f_c.jpg

Before I committed a bunch of time, I wanted to do a proof of concept first. Literally bolted it up with the explorer end links and bad geometry just to "field test".
53235618455_4ef17b3d7a_c.jpg

The old 1.4" bar was so stiff it wouldn't let the front flex at all. It had great onroad manners, it handled like it was on rails. Not so great for offroad where this truck spends the vast majority of its time. Decent front articulation with the new smaller bar below. Previously that back wheel would be squished into the bed.
53235618530_d046513f5a_c.jpg

Concept proven. With the previous bar all flex was transferred to the rear. The front axle was almost completely locked up. This translated to very poor offroad manners, if you hit a pothole on one side, both coils were trying to absorb it and it was not absorbed well. Going through uneven terrain the front being locked from articulation made it feel like the truck was trying to kickflip the camper off it's back...
53235492584_ee9bf68407_c.jpg

Random visitor out front while working on this swaybar.
53235492429_d4fb6ba147_c.jpg

Now that I knew I was on the right track I pulled some better links, off a WJ.
53245860306_0155422181_c.jpg

Also, cut down and modified the sway bar mounts to correct the geometry. It's not quite 90* between bar & links, but it's close. This style of link allows for significantly more droop than the previous balljoint style link I was running.
This was a huge win, now that the front axle can move, it rides 40% better offroad. It doesn't handle like it's a race car on the hwy anymore but it still has decent road manners with both a front and rear bar, I would say better than previous to the SAS.
53246222019_537213d700_c.jpg

Edit ** I had considered going with a stiff bar and disconnects but from what I've read disconnects are fairly clunky and I'm lazy. I would prefer a more balanced front and rear bar that allows full articulation without the need to disconnect/reconnect links. Also, this was cheap $50, any aftermarket bar with disconnects was pushing $400+.

Beautiful country,

Since big game wasn't panning out we decided to focus on small game for the drive home, bagged this nice little snow shoe hare.

Followed up by a handful of ruffed grouse. Great thanksgiving feast.
All said and done we saw:
120 grouse
8 snow shoe har
10 moose
9 whitetail (4 bucks)
7 mulies
60 pheasant
not a bad trip for animal sightings

Back home, checking for binding & line lengths when flexing,

I need to get this thing on a ramp to see how far I can push it, but this is decent and nothing is hitting or binding yet.

I would love to stick some 35's on this. 33's are definitely as big as I can go without trimming.
This is sitting on the bumpstop/shock.

Last update and then I've got to go do some more work,

Revisiting the hidden winch install. Even with pockets cut out of the winch mount, this is still a heavy package weighing almost 85 lbs without cable. The winch is 50 lbs bare. That being said it's still a hell of a lot lighter than an aftermarket bumper w/ winch, which can push 3-400lbs+.
53246277492_70b45f7d04_c.jpg

Game of millimetres making this giant 9.5 fit between the rails.
53247450653_e495150a2b_c.jpg

Mounting plates tacked into place, the stock tow hooking mounting solution sandwiches the frame between the hook and a 3/4" plate inside the frame. Hoping this is enough for this winch? I've done some awfully hard pulls with a kinetic rope on a single hook previously (2 bolts). Now I have 8 mounting bolts sandwiched.
53247450673_e3164df5cc_c.jpg

Put a lot of heat into this cradle welding it up. Having the winch mounted horizontally with the mounting brackets should really help with strength. There is almost not torque put on the cradle, it's almost entirely shear force.
53247450698_bcfd99b969_c.jpg

Grinder and a can of paint make the welder I ain't.
53247510164_51eb2e5de4_c.jpg

Ready for a final test fit,
53247510084_4ffe07eb16_c.jpg

Totally hidden and fits awesome. To each their own but I'm not a huge fan of the giant winch bumpers that give that guppy look to trucks. This was a ton of work but I definitely prefer retaining the OE look.
53247450638_d8756f5596_c.jpg

The only drawback to this setup is I need to reach under the bumper to access the free spool, which is a compromise I'll live with. Now I just need to wire it in and re-spool the cable.
