Pretty sure they sell rebuilt waterboxer type motors, but no Subaru or other conversions. They have a little write up on their motors on gowesty.com . Lots of other folks out their using the Subaru motors though. I am planning on doing the conversion to my '87 as well.

Correct. Lucas does not endorse the Subaru swap. He does provide several ported Wasserboxer engine options which produce more horsepower.

that is a serious rig. I know that the price seems high if your not in the vw culture but trust me it's what they go for. And if you have any doubts what they are capable of check them out on Youtube you'd be surprised.

I had always thought the "2.5" in a GoWesty replacement motor meant a 2.5L Subie engine, but I guess not. Is the "2.5" a bored-out waterboxer or did they come in that displacement at some point? More importantly, why? Refraining from more colorful statements I'll simply say I JUST. DON'T. GET IT.

Nope there 2.5 waterboxer was indeed a high output, I guess you would call it a high displacement or bored out waterboxer. I will say everyones choice on engines is just that and I do respect everyones choice on what they want to run in these van. There 2.5 from what Ive heard does do well but there is the need for higher octane fuel and you still have all the other small quirks that can and do arise in a waterboxer. That being said there is a motor for every vanagon owner out there so I never judge anyone for what they run. I like the Subaru for many many reasons and have never had any on road issues with my choice of engine. I love the fact that I can get in turn the key and go.....every single time. Never even a hiccup on the road. With a wife and two kids that was important to me, I still carry a very small tool kit, just because, but to this date have yet to ever have to use it.
Please lets not turn this into a "what engine conversion is the best" type of thread and get on with what is realy important here.
Who ever makes this van there own is going to get one nice ride. :smiley_drive:

Fair enough, but I do prefer your choice of engine. Do the taller 4 & 5 you installed help with fuel mileage? Also, don't know if you were able to directly compare because you put so much work in at the same time, but how much difference did the OME shocks make for the ride quality? I notice almost everyone throws those in Westys, and my own ride is suffering bad and OMEs are available....

Also, I have been studying Westys for quite some time (I think that's why I joined the site?) and yours is so unbelievable sick it's not even funny. If I had the money and the place to park it I would buy it, because I feel your asking price is a bargain for what it is compared to what else I've seen out there. I WILL own a Westy at some point in my life, I just need a few more things to change and a couple more years of saving to make that a reality.
