Year: 1986
Make: Toyota
Model: 4Runner
Trim: DLX
Mileage: 200,00X on body|<5,000 on rebuilt motor
Engine: 22RE 4 cylinder
Transmission: MANUAL
Location: Tahlequah, OK with delivery option to OX EAST in October
This 4Runner has been a dream come true for my wife and I. We have always wanted one and took the opportunity to buy this one while we were traveling full-time. This truck has been extremely reliable and has never let us down. The only reason we are selling is we stopped traveling and we got a great deal on a GX470 and want to build it instead. We have too many projects and this one needs a good home.
Interior
We added a vinyl floor kit with reflectix underneath for sound and heat retention. The radio has been replaced with a cheapish head unit and all four speakers were replaced a year or so ago. The antenna was replaced a couple of months ago.
The seats have seen better days but the fronts have canvas seat covers. The rear seats have been stored inside since we have owned it as we don’t have a need for rear seats. They will be included but not installed.
The back has a wooden platform bolted in for a fridge/cooler and a slideout for a camp stove. There is an auxiliary second AGM battery wired to a relay under the hood for charging while driving plus there is a solar input Anderson connector wired into the charge controller. A 3-circuit switch was added to the left of the steering wheel to control the front light bar, rear lights, and battery charging. All electrical additions are relayed and fused. An aftermarket tachometer is installed on the left of the steering column.
The truck is fairly identifiable from the roof rack, custom made from an old NWOR roof rack. The rack is bedlined and can be used with or without the topper installed.
The paint job was done in the driveway a few years ago and is showing some wear. It looks great from 30 feet but could use a respray if that type of thing is important to you. The topper has a fresh coat of bedliner and is easy to tough up if needed.
Freshly rebuilt 22RE by Mick Henson (ASE/Toyota Certified). Engine was rebuilt at 195,000 miles, was broken in and then taken on a 2,500 mile trip to Colorado and back with zero problems. Clutch was replaced around 191,000 miles in December 2018.
Brakes, Suspension & Steering
This setup is nearly perfect for our travel style and is a great balance of capability and comfort. The rear springs were replaced when we bought the truck and the torsion bars were replaced recently. The suspension needs nothing.
Spare Parts
Included with the truck is a handful of parts that we have accumulated along the way.
Known issues

Known issues
- Power Steering system drips a drop of fluid once a month. Was never enough of an inconvenience, plus rust prevention.
- Driver’s side CV boot is torn. A NEW replacement NAPA CV is included with the truck.
- There are a few small areas of rust, mostly around the rear fender wells and some surface rust under the truck. Most of it has been sanded down and treated. There is surface rust in different places, but the frame has zero rust and all is cosmetic.
- The muffler has a hole from the driveshaft letting go. The sound isn’t so bad, but it is louder than with a muffler. The driveshaft and u-joints are new.
