1988 toyota pickup- HELP!

I have a 1988 4wd pickup with a 1984 22r carb engine in it. I need to install a timing chain, but can't remove the crankshaft bolt that holds the pulley and balancer on. Is this bolt a reverse thread? My manual doesn't say. I don't have an impact wrench, and I just broke my 1/2" breakover trying to get this @#$%^&* out. Any Ideas? Thanks for any help/

Take a good quality six point socket and 1/2" breaker bar (high quality) and place it on the bolt with the handle against the frame. Then disconnect the coil and bump the starter with the key. Works like a charm........just make sure you put the handle on the correct side (forget which at the moment and don't want to think but take a min. and you'll figure it out) and just barely bump the starter.

You stand a good chance of breaking the starter housing or worse doing this.

use a good breaker bar or an impact wrench.

Don't underestimate the value of a good breaker bar. I snapped a half inch Crapsman then watched a fried go after the same bolt with his three eights Snap-on. The bar bent but the bolt broke loose.

Very interested in hearing the outcome of the motor crank method if you did it.
 
i used the starter to break the bolt loose on the crank when i changed my timing chain this winter. mine was a 22r-e, but i assume the crank bolts are the same (right hand threads). the handle of the breaker bar sits in a notch created by the steering box on top of the driver's side frame. take off the coil wire and just bumped it. the bolt broke loose then i unscrewed it the rest of the way with my fingers.

it is kinda scary to try but worked like a charm. good luck.

I've done this many, many times to many different models with no ill effects. The starter turns the engine on such a low gear reduction that I can't see it ever breaking from the tiny bit of resistance the bolt offers when it's broken loose.

I'm at my wits end. I tried the starter trick and it didn't break loose. I put it in 4 hi 5th gear and chocked the wheels. Bought a good breakover with an impact socket and used a 2 foot cheater. Still won't come apart. I'm afraid to heat it but don't want to destroy the balancer. Any more ideas?

I now have it tied off with approximately 400 lb feet of torque sitting on it and have been tapping on it with a hammer after soaking it with PB Blaster. Still hasn't budged.

Tried fire and ice on the bolt. Still no go. A friend of mine has a 3/4" impact he said I could use. He guarantees it will come out or it will snap it off. I hate to risk that. I'd really be up the creek then. I'm still open to any ideas. I have it still sittinf with about 400 lb feet of torque on it and soaked with PB. I'm hoping it breaks loose during the night, but it's doubtful.:mad:

on my 22R, I did the breakerbar against the frame trick - two blips of the starter and it was loose.

King Kong must have torqued that on for you previously :(

Finally beat that $&@"? bad boy. 3 different nights I heated it red hot let the glow die, and hit it with a 3/4 impact @ 140psi. Today it came out and the threads were perfect. I don't understand but I'm happy. :wings:

congrats on getting the bugger to budge, I'm sure the victory beer tasted sweet

Toyota must like playing this game with their crank bolts - on my wife's is300 the starter trick didn't get it off either, I broke a 1/2" drive breaker bar and my giant 1/2" ratchet before my roomie got back and found another breaker bar for me to have a go at it with. An hour and many curses later I knew for a fact that my kung **** was better
