1992 Pickup worth 6900?

Here is a link to a 1992 Toyota Pickup that I am going to look at Tuesday, and probably buy.

http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/cto/4476401590.html

However, I am doing so in all my inexperienced(with automotives) 18 year old glory. So I'd like the pros here on expo portal to let me know if I'm making the right decision in buying this pretty little thing. I plan on purchasing it and buying a truck bed camper, and later(this year), building a wooden camper on the back. Please give me any advice you have. Thank you!!

Value is partly with you. I wouldn't pay more than 5000 for it. It's clean looking and they are bulletproof little trucks but it's 22 years old...

If those miles can be verified, I'd be inclined to pay close to that. I'd offer 5800 and see where he goes from there.

That truck is a real beauty. Since no photos were taken underneath, you should be sure to check it out for (excessive) rust and wear. Miles can be verified through a carfax check. You probably know this, but with a big camper on back it will be a slug on the road. Also, you may need to beef up the rear spring pack if there will be a constant heavy load back there.
If the undercarriage is as clean as the rest, it's worth 6K + in my opinion.

Thoughts anyone?

The truck looks good and mileage seems to be true, based on carfax.

Some of the prices of the things he listed look high, but overall, it shows whoever is driving it is sure taking care of it.

Get the kbb value and or nada value and decide what would be a fair price from you. Seems the owner has done some good maintenance work to it. But again, check for rust underneath.

Carfax didn't exist in 1992. There's a big gap in the reported history of that truck. Buyer beware. Check it out good or have a trusted mechanic check it out for you. Price seems a little high given the lack of documented history. Does the seller have receipts of work done dating back to the mid-90's?

I paid that for a '92 RC back in '97-'98.

$3000 no more...the other $3900 is Toyota "tax", all depends if you're willing to pay it.

2,900 miles a year? Foot peddles ought to be pretty new looking if that's a fact.

I don't know anyone who has been happy with a 4 banger 4x4 Toyota with any type of camper shell. I couldn't keep mine in fifth gear on the open flats in any type of wind, like between Madison and Chicago, with stock tires.

So in other words you would not recommend buying this if I want to put a camper on the back?
Even a wooden one with a steel frame that will only be a popup and not much taller than the vehicle itself?
What kind of tires would suit?

Side note: I'm not interested in being able to go fast, just the speed limit.

Also, what the hell should I be looking for then, for what I want to do(camper)? 6 cylinder?

Not worth it. Don't do it unless you are ready to invest time and money keeping it on the road. Older trucks are built well but they have wearable parts that require replacement. I'd opt for a newer but possibly higher mileage vehicle for same price. For reference, I just picked up a 2005 tundra for $6900 with 130k on it.

So with all that experience, what's your opinion? Did any of them have a camper on back? Any of them 22 yrs old at $69hundy? :sombrero:

I have owned 2 of the 22RE equipped Yotas...apparently I didn't learn the first time. Speed limit on the highway out here is 75, it was hard pressed to go that. Try passing a semi truck on a slight incline loaded down..."ok here we go....going...going...going...going....going....ahh forget it, I'll just slide back behind the semi and draft him, at least I'll get decent gas mileage."

Now the 22RE fan boys will tell you otherwise, that it is "just enough"...I find them gutless wonderthuds...

Even have a 3.4 V6 Tacoma...it is great until you throw a load in it.

For a running around town light duty truck they are great...traveling I find them annoying. I have owned Toyotas for over 25 years now, mind you.

I would pay $3000 for that truck and no more. As a point of reference, I sold my '92 12-13 years ago for $3500...it was in excellent condition and no rust.
