1993 Diesel 4runner in Calif. Elocker'd.

Howdy folks!

Unfortunately, I've got to sell my 4runner. I've just got to have a pickup truck for work and don't want to wreck the 4runner treating it like a truck.

Anyway, here's the dealio:

It's a 1KZTE drivetrain out of a 1995 Hilux. 3.0L I4, turbo diesel, 4 spd auto. This thing pumps out some torque. I've gotten 22 mpg with it on the interstate, but it wasn't quite broken in at that point and I was going 75.

4.10 gears, so it turns about 2200 rpm at 65 mph. Elocker out of a TRD Tacoma in the rear. It's amazing how well this thing does off road with the Elocker. :sombrero:

I got the truck with 36,000 KM's on the ODO. The importer apparently used ether to start the truck, which resulted in a cracked piston about 200 miles after I got it in my 4runner. At the time, I didn't think I would ever have to part with it, so I rebuilt the engine with all genuine Toyota parts ($1200). New pistons, new rings, etc. I've put about 10,000 KM's on it since without an issue. It runs like a top. 3" exhaust as well.

Other additions: new shocks, custom front and rear bumpers, brand new 235 85 16 tires on Tundra wheels, new wheel bearings, rotors, very nice double din radio/cd unit w/ IPOD connection. Aisin hubs, OME rear coils to raise the rear, OME rear shocks, pry more that I'm forgetting.

Everything works. Power windows, locks, AC, cruise, power antenna, rear window, etc. The only problem is that the paint is faded (typical Toyota) and there is a dent on the drivers side and pass side door.

The interior is spotless, clean grey seats, no cracks in dash (covered) and the carpet is clean as well.

Elocker and idle up switch added in the dash like factory.

Price is $13000, OBO. Located in Temecula, Ca. It's 100% legal for CA, you don't have to ever go to a smog station again with this truck.

Woe is me. A CA legal/approved diesel 4Runner, nicely set up. Just what I want. Just what I need right NOW to replace my dead Jeep. Sadly, financially beyond me at the moment.

Wanna take payments?:sombrero:

Thanks for the props, guys! I wish I could take payments.....alas, I'll need the cash for a pickup truck shortly after sale....

PM's answered too.

Oh...I also forgot to add one of the biggest things.....It's intercooled as well. I put a fat front mount intercooler in it with custom piping.

As far as the steps of making the swap legal.....It's my dirty little secret...:bike_rider:

I'd like to know more about that as well.

That thing is killer!

I was just at the smog referee today, getting my new-to-me Eurovan unscrewed-up, and had spare moments to pick the tech's brain about diesel transplants vs California smog law.

Maybe he was trying to scare me, or maybe he just did, but legalizing an engine transplant is not for the feint of heart.

Will you share a little about the CA legality of this sweetpotato?

Thanks

That's not been my experience...Things are different now, especially since they are smogging 98 and newer diesels.

Also, it depends largely on who you get to deal with at the smog ref / DMV.

FWIW, I'd also be open to working a deal on shipping...I love road trips. :victory:

2) All diesel motor swaps must be proven to be a motor that was originally offered for sale in California.
I find this one interesting as a lot of diesels aren't originally sold in CA but can be brought in used from a different State.

No worries! I've never been bothered by a hijack. :coffeedrink:

It occurred to me that I neglected to post any pics of the most important part of the truck....the ENGINE!!!

A few things to note: The wiring was done professionally by Phoenix Tuning. I'm a competent mechanic, but I just didn't have the time to figure out all of the wiring. He did an excellent job. No electrical issues from day one.

For fuel supply, I am using a Cat 2 micron fuel filter. It's big, only $20 and easy to find anywhere....not to mention it's excellent fuel filtration qualities. I had to make a custom bracket and tilt it sideways a bit to fit underhood though. It's rated in gallons, so the next time it needs to be changed is probably in 2015. Lol. Clear fuel (with removable insulation protecting it) runs between the filter and injection pump. I learned the benefits of that on my other diesel swap (TDI into Sidekick).

I decided to go with one large battery instead of two. The battery is BIG and still udner Costco warranty. It started the truck multiple times at -5F in Utah this winter, so I'm confident that it's up to the task. Other than my intercooler piping, the engine compartment looks quite stock. Good space in there to work on things too.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.

PM's replied...

I should also add....I've got a pretty good assortment of extra parts as well that will go with the truck. HD torsion bars from the Hilux, stock rear coil springs, front IFS suspension parts (If you want them), a spare instrument cluster in mph and a spare 1KZTE ECU. The latter is an important part, because you can send it to Australia for aftermarket tuning :wings: while still driving the truck.

It's the 1R0749's little brother, the 1R0750. I would have gone with the big one, but it wouldn't have even come close to fitting under the hood. :ylsmoke:

These filters are totally the way to go.....better, easier, cheaper....how often do you get to take advantage of all three of those factors at once?!!?
