Just got the spindle dropped off.

The end product was a shaft size the same as the bearing race, this should help extend bearing life, although it will likely make install more difficult.

In the pics you can see the different color of the plated metal showing only the two bearing surfaces coated.

This summer I am making a trip to Wyoming and will need a longer range. I am unable to purchase an auxiliary tank before the trip, and therefore decided to build a rear bumper to hold 3 Jerry cans and a spare tire.

Initial concept sketch of the bumper shell.

The layout process took most of a day

I am really looking forward to how this bumper is going to turn out. what plate thickness did you go with?

I went with 1/8th to keep the weight down, I am thinking it may have been a mistake, but I am hoping all of the bracing I have planned as well as 1/4" bottom plate will keep everything durable.

Nice bumper so far! When you say you need a longer range.. Is that for getting to WY or once you are here? Just curious where you might be in the state that's very far from a gas station. I hope the idea for how you carry your fuel works well, I am still looking for a way to build mine.
-Cheers

The trip is with a club and they want you to have a minimum of 350 mile range, I am currently at 250 I should be around 400 with 3 Scepter Cans.

Got my latching system worked out and mocked up

Unfortunately it looks as if the latch will interfere with the spare tire. I am thinking that the simplest solution is to lengthen the passenger side swingout and shorten the driver side swingout to afford the necessary clearance, I will have a better idea tomorrow.

Got the latches all mounted up today, as well as came up with a plan for a quick release basket for Jerry Cans. I am hoping to be ready for paint tomorrow!
