For sale without AC pump, diesel pump, alternator and starter (will cost extra).

Don't forget about the 1hd-ft
Still 24v but none of the electrical headaches associated with the 1hd-fte

That's whats going in my 80 series

Interesting, in Oz Toyota circles the 1HD-FT is considered a bit of an orphan of an engine as it was only available for a few years and only available in the 80 Series cruisers. It's a relatively rare engine for Oz, not so sure about Japan. Most opt for the 1HD-T or 1HD-FTE. There are a few locations that specialise in putting together wiring looms for the conversions (both 4.5L gas or 1HZ and 1HD-FT to 1HD-FTE conversion). They also offer a full conversion (drive in, drive out) for approximately $16K to $18K AUD and 7 days for the full conversion.

Would be curious to see the end product of your conversion.

Cheers,
P

You weren't by chance in northern California over the past few weeks were you? I have seen this cruiser, or one very similar in Arcata CA (humboldt county) a few times now.

Someone is selling wire looms for converting to 1HD-FT's?

P,

Would love to know who is providing/selling wire looms for the conversions. Im in the process of prepping my 97 gasser for the 1HD-FT in my side yard. Have all EWD but a LHD wire loom ready to mate into my 97 FzJ80 would be nice!

Do you have contact details?

Best,

D

Sorry should have been more specific, wiring looms are for the following conversions:
1FZ-FE to 1HD-FTE (you need to have the HDJ79 or HDJ100 loom plus your 1FZ-FE loom to get them "spliced" together). So that's going to an engine with relatively lots of wires to another with a few electronics (1HD-FTE is a mechanical diesel with minimal electronics to control fuel delivery from pump).

In your case, going from an 1FZ-FE to a 1HD-FT should be much simpler as that engine has very little wiring.

Cheers,
P

Hehe, yeah he was in that area for a while. I am not sure of lostworld's trip plans exactly (at one point he was going to be around SEMA and Pismo over the past few days).

I friggin love this truck! I am seriously cheating on my Diesel 60... Only thing I do not like about this rig are the sliders, too bulky... some 4x4Labs sliders would be the ticket :)

Seriously though... what would a conversion cost or a converted cruiser...
I am not sure what Chris is charging for a conversion these days, I do know that it would start at around 10 grand (depending on the engine and wether he has to rebuild the engine or not)... Not cheap. This truck will be for sale as soon as some minor details are polished, it won't be cheap (Chris will be asking 25K or serious offers)

Very NICE! Engine goes without saying, but the paint work looks nice too. The door jams and the engine compartment look good
I like the color a lot as well. The only spots you can see the old paint is in the engine bay and a few other small nooks and crannies. Chris took most of the truck apart himself before taking it to the body shop to get sprayed.

Hey Mike, yep... I have been in Arcata a few times. In fact I am in Arcata this week. We used to live here and in fact recently got rid of our house in Arcata. If you wanna check out the truck I can stop by the Coast Guard station, or we can meet up somewhere.

Evidently he is not asking enough, with a Chevy motor conversion and an asking price of $52,000 over in the classifieds here on ExPo. I would take Chris' work any day without even seeing what kind of work resulted in a price like that.

Crazy prices being thrown around in this thread!! :Wow1:

FYI, you can buy a really nice late model diesel 80 series in Panama for 10 grand. Manual tranny hard to find but they do exist down there.

yep, using this pricing logic but with a real diesel conversion like the green 94 it should be priced at 90K or hell why not 150K.
I think everyone has got a chuckle from the 52K posting.

BTW I also love the cruiser in this thread and wish it was financially in the cards right now.

I don't know....for that kind of cash I would rather try to do it myself and fail.

Motor plus tranny in good condition plus import fees....$10k to my door, possibly less. Actual cost for me to install myself, maybe $5k in misc stuff. So for $15k plus a $2-3k Cruiser it could be a done deal. Let's say $20k is a fair number if you do it yourself. That leaves a whole bunch of cash for things like lift, ect ect. Not to mention enough cash left over to hit the road for a year or more!

Trust me I am well aware of what a quality shop charges for mods. At $60-100/hr. it adds up fast too. I have also spent tens of thousands to have a shop do things for me. Thing is, in the last few years I have really come to realize it is money much better spent if I do the work myself. Granted I don't have a machine shop but I can tear a motor down and send it to a machine shop. Not only will you save huge piles of money doing these things yourself you learn from it. You also gain the great feeling that comes from a job well done. Plus you know the engine and or truck inside and out to the point that you can fix just about anything yourself. In the bush or if traveling far into other countries that is worth more then anything else for piece of mind. Not to mention when you know how to work on it yourself you can help others while you travel which is also a rewarding feeling/experience. If I was made of money I would pay somebody to do it all, maybe. Thing is I have done that and then hit the road in Latin America, I don't like the feeling of wondering what is up with my truck. I like to know what is up with my truck. The only way I can feel that I know my truck inside and out is to do the work myself. Think about it...what is better; paying somebody to do this for you and then 500 miles into Baja you have some dramas. You have no cell service or a way to contact the builder for help trouble shooting and fixing the problem. Sure you may be able to find some roadside mechanic to help you fix it but also maybe not. On the other hand, you did it yourself; a problem arises and you simply get out the tools, crack a beer and fix it.

I like the OD green a lot too. But it would be a very poor color choice for travels south of the border.
