Having trouble sourcing an alternator for a 1994 e 350 7.3idi. all the ambo stuff is disconnected . Not sure if I have to go back in with the high amp alt. Or can I get by with a lesser amp unit that will bolt in. The original proving hard to find . Any help is appreciated. Thanks

The quick answer is that you can. I'd recommend using an alternator that will more than meet your needs. You'll never regret having a higher output alternator... but you will regret not having enough. Upgrading to an ambulance alternator is a common upgrade for those with a regular alternator.

That said, at least on a '97 Powerstroke, the alternator mount is different for the 215 amp Mitsubishi alternator than for a regular one. When mine needed to be replaced, I opted to find another ambulance alternator despite it's slightly higher cost It didn't require any new hardware or wiring to swap it in.

What alternator are you looking for? Have you checked ebay?

Thanks for the reply bikersmurf. I have to get the alternator model on Monday. I should not have jumped the gun on this thread until I had that. Will get back here when I have more Intel.

I am looking for a suitable replacement for a lestek ems270. I would love to find a newer unit with the same bolt pattern.

I found them described as: lestek brute alternator 270 amp

Somme info ?

One for sale:

I don't know if a Mitsubishi 275 amp ambulance alternator from a '97 PSD could fit onto an IDI. It uses a huge 8-groove belt. I've never seen an IDI beside a PSD so I don't know how different they are.

Haven't read the whole thread... Alternatives?

follow up.
went thru motor city reman to get an alternator that would bolt in. 8.25 in 180 degree offset is how the van is bracketted. They could not come up with one with external regulation. they sent me a one wire ford replacement 200 amp.
alt bolted right in hooked up the positive wire to the one stud available and it works. I say that guardedly as it only has about an hour of driving on it and it was really simple.
the only hitch was the posi post on alt was 1/4 in.
my lugs were way too big to fit that post set up. I made my own lugs out of copper tubing.
