Ok, picked up a '95 Skamper 065S for the back of the 1stgen Tundra. Previously, we had a topper, built pull-out drawers under the bed and a 200W solar generator from scratch, and drove it to Florida a couple years ago, and more recently, Alaska. After a few years, and constant rain in AK, we looked for and found an upgrade--a Skamper for less than a couple grand, with a Dometic Heat Pump supported with a couple aluminum bars set on the torsion bars.
My wife and I removed the 100lb Dometic unit, as well as a bunch of damaged EPS/Styrofoam. Unfortunately, I have nowhere to put the roof or any access to dry storage, so we are attempting to replace it with the roof intact. The rear corner braces are connected by an L-bracket, so there's no movement of the corner brackets, but there are some sunken roof corners.
My plan is to adhere cross braces (1x2s) directly to the underside of the fiberglass roof, probably with Gorilla Glue, Locktite PL300, contact cement, or Liquid Nails Extreme. The top of the roof looks like a sunken swimming pool, so I'm trying to give it a convex shape by attaching a worm gear and 7ft length of hose clamp screwed to the 1x2s.
For the existing Yakima 1A and artificial raingutters, I'm thinking of attaching that to the sides of the roof to avoid extra penetrations and sealing with a no sag caulk that will stick to the silicone roof coating.
I also removed a 100W solar panel attached with a bit of silicone and screwed down thru the 1/8" roof and Styrofoam. I'm surprised that hadn't blown off.
A rep with Heng recommended powdered detergent (contains less residue) to scrub down the roof. Looking like silicone, I plan on sanding too, and maybe another scrub down with acetone.
I tried a small test strip of Eternabond, and it peels right off, along with every other adhesive tape I tried to cover some holes in the roof from a solar panel mount when a storm blew in.
Sooo, at least I don't need to rebuild any rotted sides (yet, at least). I painted on some wood hardener at the rear corners just to be safe.
Has anyone used 3M VHB tape to adhere anything to your roof? Will it stick to a silicone roof?
The Home Depot a few miles away stocks Henry products, including 587/Dura Brite and 887/Tropi-Cool. Is the Tropicool the best bet for an existing silicone roof?
