1996 Jeep XJ "Betty" Build Thread

Hello there friends,

I bought my Jeep last May (2013). I bought her the way she looks in the photo below. She came with 32 inch BFG All Terrains, a 4.5 inch lift, and flowmasters. When I got her she only had 139,000 miles on it. Today she has only 146,000 so she's still a baby.

Here's a photo from the day I got it.

I bought my jeep a from a woman who originally posted it on craigslist for $3,000. I figured why not go for it since it was what I wanted my Jeep to look like. Yeah yeah, I know people say "built not bought." I emailed her and asked if she would hold it for a couple days while I tried to get some money together. She told me she would hold it for the weekend- I was stoked. I tried and tried to come up with some more money asap but it just wasn't happening. I ran out of time and had to shamefully email her and let her know that I couldn't come up with enough money to buy it. I said at the end up the email that I was very thankful that she held it for me and sorry to waste her time, but for some reason if she wanted to sell it for $1,000 cash I would gladly buy it off of her.

Here's a photo from when some friends and I took the Jeep to Big Caliente Hot Springs behind Santa Barbara.

I checked my email that night and also for the next few days, but I got no response from her. I just figured she thought my offer was funny and blew it off. But one week later at mid-night I got an email from her.

She told me how she was moving to a new place and that it only had one parking spot. The jeep was her second vehicle, and she had actually got a flat tire on it the day before as well. She told me she was super over the jeep, and that if I came the next day and picked it up from her she would take $1,000 cash. I called up a friend and the next day we hit the road together to pick it up. We showed up and pumped up the tire with some air. We drove it over to Goodyear and had them patch the tire for $20. We drove back to her place, I gave her a $1,000 cash, and we headed home. That's the wonderful story of how I got my jeep of craigslist.

Pretty cool story.

Is it painted flat black or does it just need some elbow grease to bring the paint back?

Real nice Cherokee! I've an '88 myself that I got for around the same price, but it wasn't lifted at all. they are definitely little runners. My Jeep Cherokee will outwheel most things on the trail with ease. Course, now it's built to the hilt. :D

The previous owner painted it flat black, it was red when it was stock. You can see the red on some of the underside of panels and where there's scratches.

One day I might change it again, or atleast make it look good again by redoing the paint job.

Took out the old shocks, because they were dead. It looks like they have seen some stuff in there life time.

I should have gotten a different brand then Doetsch Tech shocks, but I had to buy a few different things to fix my Death Wobble (DW). So instead of looking into new ones I just bought the exact same shocks to make sure they would fit. I hope to upgrade to Old Man Emu eventually.

Here's a photo of the new ones in.

They aren't the best shocks you can buy, but honestly I don't have any complaints about them they haven't done me wrong yet.

Love the name of your xj. My 94 was named Betty Blue. Was a dang tank. Had 2 built xjs then went to the dark side. Ive had 3 built zjs and my current one is a 96 w all the bells and whistles.

Yeah I call her Black Betty after that Ram Jam (whoops) song haha, and you should come back to the light side some day haha.

Went for a drive today, hope to work on her again soon. Recently purchased a tow package. I got it in the mail, just need to make time to install it.

Miss my '96 XJ. Had the 2.5" Old Man Emu lift on it and loved it. Doesn't sound like much but the axle articulation and aired down tires, it was awesome. Even with no locker the other experienced offroaders I was with could not believe where I could go with that thing. They'd get hung up and I just pass on through like it was nothing. I once finally got hooked up when trying to do a tight twist around a tree on a muddy incline.

The guy I got mine from bought it new / stock strictly for street. It had a lot of under armor protection that also looked stock. Haven't really seen another like it though. Always wondered if it was an add on option with the dealer that he went with.

**edit**

Just thought of something. If your exhaust header is original, look at where it connects. Mine appeared to have a smaller diameter pipe / restriction. It cracked and I replaced it with a better one. Really helped it breathe and gave the 4.0 HO even more power and upped the mpgs.

Your XJ sounds awesome, I actually want to switch my lift to an Old Man Emu one day. I also need to replace my header / down pipe. I jumped my Jeep while I was at Pismo Beach Dunes, and when I landed my axle came up so far that my driveline knuckle smashed into the pipes. It broke one of the bolts that connects the header to the down pipe and pinched it about 40%.

The list of things to fix is long, it seems to break faster than I break it haha. :rally_guys:

Spent the afternoon taking my Fender Flares off. One was damaged pretty badly, I dig the way they look without fender flares anways. So off they went!

Here's a photo of Betty without any fender flares.

Spent the afternoon yesterday with a friend of mine installing my new tow package. They put on the box that it is a thirty minute installation, but it ended up taking around three hours for us to finish it. :Wow1:

And finally, the finished product.

ALSO, note to self, don't drive in the mud the day before you plan to work on your vehicle. :Mechanic:
